smokey....and not in a good way

Post by lazyb5 » Sat Jan 03, 2015 5:24 pm

Hi all, so after a week of sitting there I decide to start the bongo to go to b&q as you do. Starts first times as normal but we have clouds of smoke from the exhaust, this doesn't appear to be a glow plug issue as she starts first time, it appears to me to be oil smoke, bluey to look at. Anyway took it for a drive and still smoke but now just a little. Got home and checked inlet either side of the turbo no oil from turbo. Started again and loads of smoke cleared but still a thin haze. I changed the head gasket last August and she's been ok till now, any ideas anyone this ones got me stumped.
I suppose I may have broken a piston ring but she doesn't sound any different.
Anyone want a lovely tintop with red arrows display smoke.

If the oil level is ok and there's nothing obviously amiss, give it an 'Italian tune up' which involves giving it a good blast down a motorway or A road while keeping the revs up high (3rd gear). That will give all the sooty deposits a chance to get hot and burn off.

what engine oil are you on and is it using oil mate, just a little, sounds like the valve stem seals. when you take off the rocker cover vent pipe to the rear of the head air pipe is it chuffing. then check to see if the pipe is blocked,
when you the turn engine off when warm the oil maybe running down the valve stem and if the valve is open it may enter the bore, even when closed it pools behind the valve head and enter when the engine starts up.

are you using veg oil, is so it may be rings passing/stuc.

hi all, ive tried the italian tune up, and no good, this is a steady burn of oil, when i take off bleed tube its chuffing as i expect, lots of vapour. im heading in the valve stem oil seals direction myself, maybe something i should have done when i had the head off in august.
Dont think its blocked banjo filter as it wouldnt run right would it?
It still drives ok doesnt overheat but smokes.
Thanks for the advice guys.

try just checking the cold start solenoids and the vac pipes to them and the egr solenoids and egr valve are working both on and off when warmed up, ive seen the vac system hold the throttle up so over fueling via the fuel pump. if the vac pipes are damaged or melted/sucking flat then the egr maybe stuc open so its putting egr gasses into the air side giving a bad burn in the cylinders, the egr shouldnt open until its all up to temp.

Hi Ady egr is blocked off so can't be that, will check solenoids to make sure it's not stuck on cold running, hadn't thought of that, currently going with plan b, sorn until it's warmer / I have time to fix, then sell.

Yeah I had fun doing it as well, but at a time where we need 2 economical cars, youngster at uni and elderly parents. As you say may be just stuck cold running solonoid. I'll have a quick check of that this weekend.

Thanks Ady spot on it was a stuck cold start, looks like I will have to replace a couple of vacuum pipes but that's all, running sweet as a nut now :D
