New Shape Bongo Front Indicator Bulb Replacement

I've been going round our Bongo (new shape 1999) finding out how to change all the bulbs and building up a spares list. The rear 21W/5W stop/rear bulb isn't the normal bayonet fitting, it's a 16mm wedge fitting (well that's what they're called on the website I found them on). The reversing bulb is a 10mm 18W wedge fitting, I could only find a 21W replacement for that but that's OK as the reversing lights are too dim anyway.

Anyway, I transgress, I came unstuck when I tried to get at the front indicator bulbs as there doesn't seem to be anyway to get at them apart from removing the headlight cluster (it looks as if I will have to remove the radiator grill as well). I tried going in from under the wing but wasn't able to locate the back of the housing. I haven't tried removing the headlamp cluster as it seems an overkill just to replace a bulb.

Has anyone with a new shape Bongo had to replace a front indicator bulb and if so, how did you do it?

I found the bulbs on http://dashlight.co.uk, they are part numbers 7875 and 921. I've only just ordered them and won't know for sure if they are correct until I receive them. The website has good pictures of them and they look the same as the ones on the Bongo.

Just tried to find a replacement for the U shaped fluorescent tube in the main compartment. Anyone any idea of its part number or wattage or even where I could get a replacement?. The only one I've found that looks similar is a "black light" tube for a fly-killer.

I posted a request for info on how to replace the front sidelights on my new shape about 18 months ago. There was some response - I just wish I could remember what it was!

Do a search on the forum and you should find it.

Regarding the interior fluorescent - again there has been info on the correct type in the forum.

There is nothing special about it and it is readily available.

I did search the forum both on the indicator bulb replacement and the fluorescent tube replacement.

On the first, I found several requests for info but no answers.

On the latter, I found a hit with a link to the RS Components site but couldn't find them there. I also did a Google search on the various tube idents (L6W/30, Toshiba FL6W and Sylvania F6W/T5) with no luck. I'll take the tube to a local electrical shop and see if I have any luck.

There are several suppliers of Japanese parts advertising on eBay. I can't track the specific one down at the moment, but they stock a range of differenty flourescent fittings for Mazda, Toyota, Mitsibishi etc. I'm sure a delve with Google with find what you are looking for.

I will delve into my Bongo later today in an attempt to solve the problem of sidelight replacement.

I will also get details of the farinaceous (work it out!) interior light bulb.

OK, I went back to one of the original posts on the subject of the fluorescent interior lamp:

I removed my original Toshiba tube (FL6W) and wandered into our local electricians shop. 1.99p later I had a Sylvania F6W/T5 212mm tube,and there was light. He had lots of them as he said they were quite common, so suited me and my Bongo.

I have further researched these lamps and cannot find them listed anywhere on RS or CPC or various "we-can-supply-anything" lamp specialists.

I am puzzled by the F6W/T5 212mm description because my lamp is only 145mm long, including the pins.

My lamp has no markings. It is a folded tube with four pins sticking out in a square of four.

The lamp looks similar to the lower one which is described as a tight bend U tube. However the picture refers to a purple insect attracting lamp 25W and which is far too big anyway.

So, I am none the wiser in finding a replacement!

I have just re-investigated replacing the front winky-winkies on my new shape.

Again, it looks a complicated job and I couldn't be arsed to try it.

The lampholders are tantalisingly just visible with the rears of them disappearing into a hole in the bulkhead behind the wing.

I am certain that it involves removing the "radiator" grille and then the appropriate headlamp unit completely.

Just to remove the grille involves one screw and numerous squeeze-both-sides plastic fixings.

The headlamp units seem to be held in by one bolt at the top (easy access) and then several more lower down that must be a nightmare to get at.

I reckon it would be almost as easy to remove the entire wing!

...hmm I've got a new shape, and it does look a right pain.

Had an Audi A4 once and a front flasher lamp bulb went. Audi Assistance came out and proceeded to remove half the front of the car to replace it - took him an hour. I found out afterwards it was possible from the back, without removing the grille and bumper - if you knew how. He obviously didn't. He also didn't find out the connector was loose before he removed half the car...

I reckon if you were to replace a flasher bulb, it would be worth putting an LED one in, have a look here:

Oh well, just have to hope mine dont fail.

Pippin, you dug out my old entry about my fluorescent tube, the detail you quoted was what it said on the box. But to repeat, take the old tube to an electricical shop (local supplier, not Currys etc.) and he will sort you out. Not going outside to look at fitted tube at this time as it is tanking it down. Actually shakey, I am into light bulbs in a big way.

I am the maintenance electrician in a large hotel here and I estimate that I am responsible for about 1,500 light bulbs!!!!

Among the twenty or so different types that I keep in stock I have nothing like the Bongo one. Nor do any of my suppliers. Neither have I seen any in any catalogue.

Again I am stunned by your superior knowledge Pippin, I've just been out and pulled the tube (fluorescent!) and you are right, the tube is marked Sylvania standard F6W/T5/135. Can I be Watson to your Holmes? Ah go on, I could learn so much, Please.
