Cleaning oil from alternator

Post by thedogsbollox » Sun Jun 09, 2013 11:57 am

After all my charging problems I have managed to get a second hand alternator to fit to my Bongo. Unfortunately the donor vehicle looks to have had a bit of a leaky rocker cover and the alternator has born the brunt of most of it. Is it wise to clean it and what with?
It is covered in a sticky slimy mix of oil and dirt. Thought water but its electrical. Thought paragon but once again it's electrical and may go in flames if any left in there. WD40?
Any suggestions or should I leave it alone?
