Well, finally sorted. It was actually a case of two duff pumps, mechanic was proved right, and Ruby is running sweet as a nut again.
Mechanic thinks there is still a tiny power loss somewhere, so will run a full pressure test on engine next week.

Have to say a huge thank-you to Colin at County Cars, Sussex. This problem DID turn out to be faulty pumps..3 of them, in fact.
Not only did Colin persevere through 3 changes of pumps, in the end he took one off a Bongo on his forecourt, as we knew that one was good, and put it on mine. Having proved that the fault was indeed the pump, he's left the 'good' one on my van, which leaves him with a car he can't sell until he finds a good pump to go with it.
I've said it before..he's only a father and son small business, no flash garage,but he's a gem, and I can't recommend him highly enough.
