Bongo Wont Start
Recently put a new cylinder head on my '96 diesel bongo, and everything is working as it should. Driven at least 150 miles since.
Yesterday morning I started the van as normal "vrrrrmm" then the engine stopped as though I had switched it off. I thought I had knocked the key with my leg but no, it was in correctly.
I had a look at the engine today and thought because of the recent work I may have not connected a vacuum line or an electrical connector properly which had fallen out.
No sign of anything wrong anywhere.
Anyone got any idea of how to start fault finding. I don't know where to look. It started so the glow plugs must have been working.
I can't find any info on the various little solenoids and vacuum lines so have no path of logic to work through.
Urgent Help most greatfully appreciated.

Hi Pete, I am no expert but have you checked the handbrake microswitch and gear selector?

Re: Bongo Wont Start
Does it turn over or are you just getting lights on the dash ?
Re: Bongo Wont Start
Yes everything lights up.
Glow plug light stays on for the usual time.
Engine spins over.
Does not fire.
If it was fuel running out, I would have expected it to cough and slowly fade out.
When it started, it cut out like it had been switched off.
So in the electrical system somewhere is something to stop the engine when you turn the key off.
This would be my first port of call if I knew where or what it was.
I have checked all the under bonnet fuses and the ones on the dash.
Cheers

Hi Pete,
The fuel cut off solenoid 24-3002 is the control.Make sure it has a 12v supply and the rubber valve is intact.

Thanks
I will check in the morning.
I see the valve in the diagram but don't know what the rubber valve is.
Do I have to thake the solenoid out to check this?
Cheers

Re: Bongo Wont Start
Well I have now checked the solenoid and it has power and clicks on and off.
There is power to the glow plugs as well.
Any other ideas?

Hi,it would be worthwhile slackening one of the injector pipes, turn the engine and check for fuel.Owing to the fact that the fuel will be pressurised protect your eyes.
PS how much fuel is in the tank.

Re: Bongo Wont Start
My first thought was the solenoid.
Thinking laterally maybe a leak on the fuel supply and the low pressure side of the IP is sucking air?
Try disconnecting the pipe after the air filter and spray WD40 into it while cranking, the engine should start and revving it may draw the fuel through.

To infinity and beyond
Re: Bongo Wont Start
Van has 1/4 tank full.
I charged the battery and cranked it over and it started this morning.
One of my mates who works on Landrovers turned up and reckoned it had air in the fuel line. He has suggested I temporarily fit a piece of clear plastic fuel hose so I can see if there are any bubbles.
He has also suggested replacing the fuel filter whilst I am in the area.
Is there a way of priming the lines after fitting pipes and filter?
Cheers

Re: Bongo Wont Start
Replace the fuel filter but fill it up with diesel or injector cleaner will help the bleed process. Also crack an injector nut that will help also. Not normally very hard to bleed.
Personally I find it easier to remove the whole fuel filter housing and refit from above.

Re: Bongo Wont Start
Another way to prime the fuel system is to use a pela pump or another vacuum pump to draw the fuel through.
Re: Bongo Wont Start
Some have a hand primer on top of the filter body.Turn to release, pump, then lock when finished.PeteH wrote:Van has 1/4 tank full.

Re: Bongo Wont Start
The priming pumps are pretty rare on Bongos, but someone recently bought one of these to fit so it can be primed if required. Just fit it in line with the incoming fuel line:
