Intermittent cutting out

Post by Pete Muncer » Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:11 pm

My 1998 Freda (SGL3F 2.5 diesel) has developed an irritating fault in recent months - occasionally (say every few hundred miles) the engine will cut out - it will automatically restart if travelling at any speed, but if stationary will need restart on the ignition key. This has now happened 8 times over the last 6 months. As the engine cuts, there is a momentary rise in revs, as if the gearbox has jumped out of gear, followed almost immediately by the engine picking up again if mobile (otherwise use the key). Can't decide whether it's electrical, fuel system or even gearbox (it's an auto box). Any bright ideas would be appreciated.
Also, any tips for cleaning mould off the tent part of the Auto Free Top?

Worth checking the fuel stop solenoid & make sure the connection is secure, on the rear end of the fuel pump.

when it cuts out do you get dash lights on, or not on.

Dash lights come on when engine cuts - also gauges (fuel / temp) start to sink back to zero, then recover when engine cuts back in.

If your gauges Temp, Fuel & Rev's drop back that suggests an electrical problem, which could well include dropping the Fuel solenoid as well. Try checking the 100Amp main and 60 Amp Ignition fuses;

you say the fuel gauge moves toward zero,are you sure.
it stays up even when ignition off, so if it is dropping this may point you in the dirrection of the fault.

I reckon the fuel gauge could be a red herring, or it could point to an earth issue mebe? You haven't had the battery replaced recently have you? check the battery terminals are tight (& the battery clamp is not broken as Karena's was, clamp was done up tight, but the clamp was broken #-o giving wierd electrical issues) & check the earth straps.

After several months of various theories on the cutting-out problem, took the van for a service today (at Hitchin Autocare - highly recommended for Bongo owners in Herts. & Beds.) and the cause appears to have been loose ignition switch contacts - simple solution after all. Anyway will now plan our trip to Ireland in May with more confidence. Will advise only if problem has not been solved, otherwise no news is good news.
