Help....Black smoke, slight chugging after starting
Hi Guys and gals,
First post on here, so Hi first of all!! I am having a niggling issue with my Bongo and I'm hoping you guys can shed some light on it. The Bongo starts first time, every time with out any issues. If you immediately drive off it is fine. However, if after starting, it sits ticking over for say 15 seconds or more it starts to 'chug' a little bit with the result of black / grey smoke coming out the rear. This issue quickly disappears with a few revs of the engine or even if it is left to it's own it will clear itself and then run fine for the rest of the day. This issue only happens in the morning, for the rest of the day it is fine and as I say, it starts first time every time.
The Bongo is fully serviced (regulary) and the fuel / air filters were replaced in the last service 2 weeks ago, plus glow plugs were checked and found to fine.
Any tips / advice would be greatly received.
Cheers,
Andy

Welcome Ventanandy,
sounds like a glow plug has started to fail, not a lot to worry about. Do a search on here to find out how to change.

Also check the cold start vacuum solenoids are operating ok, on the drivers side of the engine, the front 2 of 4, they should pick the revs up on start up, one only picks up below 20 degrees C, t'other below @55 degrees C, that one should also work when the ac compressor kicks in (if your ac is gassed up ok & working) to stop the revs dropping on tickover when that extra load is applied.
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Interesting - our Bongo does the same - so, in laymans terms!!! - just how do you
check the cold start vacuum solenoids are operating ok

This may help? (Or not.) http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... f+the+weekJezza wrote:Interesting - our Bongo does the same - so, in laymans terms!!! - just how do youcheck the cold start vacuum solenoids are operating ok
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

...and of course make sure the glowplug light has gone out (and maybe wait another few seconds after that) before you turn the key and attempt to start, esp. when the engine is stone cold as in 1st thing in the morning.

Some info from http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/tips.aspx:
BLUE SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: Engine is burning engine oil, injection timing is incorrectly set.
BLACK SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: Too much fuel is being delivered to the engine or the fuel that is being delivered is not correctly atomised, Exhaust Gas Reciculation (EGR) system has failed or is incorrectly set of has become clogged with soot.
WHITE SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: If the ambient temperature is low, steam which is normal and usually clears, if the smoke never clears, water is entering the engine (cylinder head, head gasket, liner problem).
GREY SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: Injection timing is incorrectly set, fuel is not being atomised correctly, something other than diesel has been added to the the fuel tank.
METAL PARTICLES FOUND IN FUEL FILTER - Cause: Injection components have begun to disintegrate.
ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT (MIL) ILLUMINATES - Cause: The engines ECU has picked up a fault, requires the vehicle to be plugged into a diagnostic code reader to identify/locate the fault.
VEHICLE GOES INTO 'LIMP MODE' - Cause: A serious fault has occured, requires the vehicle to be plugged into a diagnostic code reader to identify/locate the fault.

yes, that thought did cross my mind (about smoke being black, and it being a fuel delivery problem). Still, eliminate simple things from enquiries anyway esp. with ambiguity of black/grey smoke.Simon Jones wrote:Some info from http://www.dieselbob.co.uk/tips.aspx:
