Now I'm worried Geoff. My loose belt is the one on the right of your picture. Under the passenger seat. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I think that's the belt for the air con compressor.

Yup that's not the one for the alternator :-( Sounds like you might have multiple problems ?

If the passenger side is just AC no problem with loose belt as my compressor is knackered anyway.
It would suggest now that the alternator needs replacing. The alt belt has a little play but not excessive. I put the battery on charge 9 hours ago and it is still not fully charged ( 7 month old Bosch). Looking like alternator.
Thanks for putting me on the right path!

Took V6 to A&J today in Worthing. Great blokes. Alternator was knackered. My new £150 one was the right one of 2 (chosen by holding a camera inside engine bay and taking random shots) and my new belt good. Once they have changed a coolant hose under passenger seat (I took that spare along as well) I can pick her up in the morning. Very happy.
Thanks for advice, particularly Geoff, and we can now get her spic and span for a 4 week trip to Portugal. Ferry booked to Santander March 3.

Good to here, those two lads know what there up to and are interested in the job as well! When we first turned up out of the blue and spoke with them they were out there, seats up inside 5 minutes, taking a good look at what the vehicle was and actually used the manuals I left in the van for them if they were needed.
