Headlight coating

I have one of my headlights with 30% of the coating removed.... I don't know how this has happened. It was like this when I bought it.

Is there a means of removing the coating altogether? possibly recoating it with what ever it is?

It's a late model 2001 HiD type.

I have tried the perspex polish but that don't seem to touch it.

Any suggestions........

Try T-CUT that seems to work but you need a lot of elbow grease to go with it.

you could use a polishing machine, and there is a product out to re apply this coating. It may be Wurth but not 100% sure. This coating is a UV Coating to protect the plastic from deterioration.

A pal of mine had problems with tarnished head lamp lenses.
He told me he cured it by using bicarbonate of soda and a nylon scourer.
He then applied Crystal Disc cd repair fluid using a soft cloth.
He said it restored them like new and will probably stop the yellow coming back,as they are now protected by the Polymer in the cleaner.

Ps he also said,that the tarnishing is caused by the UV coating wearing off.

Beware of nylon scourers.... ....some of them are vicious enough to damage stainless steel......I can recommend Fenwicks Windowise for cleaning your headlights and your wind deflectors and your caravan windows if you have got one.....
If you type in Fenwicks into google you will find their site.....the stuff really does work because I use it myself....not on commission by the way.....

It needs something that dissolves the coating but not the lens.

I took a gamble and used paraffin (white spirit is more or less the same) to soften and lift the flakes of film but it needed a gentle rub with toothpaste to completely remove the yellow tinge.

As a general rule, I never use abrasives to clean anything. All they do is provide a key for future dirt to take hold.

Toothpaste is a fairly friendly abrasive in comparison to most of the household cleaning products.

for cleaning the headlights (and wind deflectors) i use meguiars plast-rx (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT). it brings them up a treat as it is specifically for plastics but as the coating is long gone from the headlights it means a fairly regular polish is required. a coating to save this operation would be great. where is this this fluid avaiable from? oh , our headlights tint off to a greeny sort of colour!

I've found a few Youtube 'detailing' vids prescribing wet sanding at 1000, then 1500 then 2000 grade, then buffing with a rubbing compound then using the aforementioned plast RX polish. The results on the vids looked brilliant but I'm concerned that the wet sanding would cause bigger issues. What do you think?

I would have thought that judicious use of a hairdryer should soften it - then peel it off?

Same for those stupid ones on the mirror glasses.

I have sanded and polished scratches out of many headlamp lenses and not caused any problems. Obviously the UV coating has gone and can be re applied, but if not just keep them waxed up and it would take years for the plastic to deteriorate. Just do it and dont worry about it.
