Coolant Alarm "WINTER BEEP"

Post by haydn callow » Sat Oct 23, 2010 10:43 am

As the weather gets colder we get the same obsevation every winter......My coolant alarm has a much longer "test" beep and "mutters" a bit until we get going.

The alarm depends on the coolant to conduct the small electric current from the Tank probe/screw to earth....Coolant is quite a good conductor when warm (above 20C) below this temperture it gradually becoms much less able to conduct and at temps of 5C and below very poor indeed.....

So...if your alarm "mutters" untill the coolant warms up a bit ...this is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about....

Of course if this persists even when warm.....investigate and check your levels.

Thanks, I had noticed in the last couple of days when it has been really cold that the beep seemed longer but I thought I was just being neurotic. I have just had the coolent flushed and refilled by the man locally who has always done my cars and he followed the instructions to the letter. That was last week and I have used it loads since then and it seems fine but I have read so many horror stories on here I can't help worrying and the coolent alarm is so reassuring.

Never mind the "Winter Beep" my alarm which at one time scared the living daylights out of me everytime i turned the ignition became more subdued and now doesn't make a noise at all. The warning light comes on but no noise. Any ideas?

Mine did that - worked one day, quiet the next then silent.

Suggest you PM Haydn for advice - he sorted mine out no problem.

I was hoping he might be cruising the forum, I can't be the only one who has lost the beep. I've looked on the floor under the dash, can't see it!
