Its back at the garage now.

The breakdown chap tested the circuit about 15 minutes after the engine had started and he definitely didn't think they should be on for that long.

I wonder if the relay has welded itself shut?
Keeping the power to the glow plugs for that long wont do them any good.
Easy enough to test, good luck! :D

The garage are saying that they think its the relay control unit that's gone. Apparently they had alot of trouble getting the glow plugs out the second time.

Is the relay different to the control unit or would both need to be replaced (likely)

does anyone have the relay or control unit lying around spare, cluttering up their house and desperate to get rid of...

The Relay has most likely welded, otherwise the control unit is the entire PCM (performance Control Module ?) which I very much doubt has failed - there would be many other symptoms!

The only obvious route to test a glowplug would be to power it up and see if it glows! So you would have to remove them and test each in turn, in which case its probably best to replace them all with new ones given that you won't know the age of the originals anyway.

If you don't have a tester for the glowplugs, you can look at the ends. As a rough guide, if the ends are black, they're not working well. But as I said, it's a rough guide.
