URGENT HELP PLEASE......ITS HAPPENED!!
Hi, my wife came back in the bongo last night sying that she can hear a strange screaching sound from underneath the bongo and a possible smell of burning. I was in no state to look last night but suspected a fan belt was slipping so as she only does short journeys said it would be ok to drive until I had a look tonight. She phoned me this morning and said it had happened again, just before she got to work.
Anyway, I've had a go myself tonight and I couldn't hear or smell anything whilst it was sat on the drive so took it up the road with the passenger engine cover up. I kept an eye on the temp gauge but it seemed normal and nothing apparent. However just as I was about a mile away I started to hear it and rather it being a screach it was more of a low pitched whistle which tended to INCREASE when it was at IDLE. When I was accelarating it died off a bit but slowing down brought it back, it was then that I noticed THE TEMP GAUGE RIGHT OVER IN THE HOT!!
I was a couple hundred of yards from home so nursed back, then turned it all off but kept the fans running until it has now cooled down. When I turned it off there was some gurgling and bubbling going on but not a lot of steam. I posted a topic last week about having to top up the header tank once in a while but with no obvious leak so I'm guessing this has something to do with it... So, I guess the questions are......
1. What are the chances of me doing any lasting damage?
2. Any ideas on what has caused it?
Thanks for any help.

The signs are bad.
Get it checked out PDQ. Someone local to Pompey may be able to take a look but don't drive it 'till you know the score.
Fingers crossed for you.

As you appear to have cooked it on 3 occasions, the prospect of lasting damage is high. You will be aware, from reading other threads, that the Bongo temperature gauge is useless. It rarely moves from the 11 o'clock position and by the time it's gone right up, the damage is already done.
What caused it? - as you've been losing coolant, you presumably have a leak. This may have allowed air into the system or the level to drop too low, causing the overheating.

Hello Aunt Trumpet
I've phoned Dave Tyler, the owner of Quay Motors in Quay Lane in Gosport, Hampshire ( a very Bongo Friendly garage ) He can help.
My Bongo has overheated in the past a few times and I was soooooooo lucky it survived (touches wood several times) , so theres hope for your bongo

On a more serious note.
Have you considered writing to The Sun & asking Diedre?

My thoughts are that it could be the water pump..or thermostat not opening?
No milkyness in the oil cap.
Not checked the exhaust as I turned it offf straight away.
yes, we know each other well, in fact you can say we are a right pair of Aunts.Hmmmm, An Aunt Self Help Section evolving here!!
So, what is my best choice? How big a job is the water pump? or thermostat?
Re: URGENT HELP PLEASE......ITS HAPPENED!!
they are not big jobs just awkward
diy you have to jack front up
then remove that big scavage fan to get your head in
the guy did the bolts up must have hands half the size of mine
then your on your back in the dark reaching up
my water pump was screaching and on removal only had one blade left on its impellor

So, do you guys/girls reckon it'll be ok to fill up with water and drive slowly to a garage for a check up? I'd have a go myself as I know my way around an engine but we need it back asap.

If you've got breakdown cover, drive it just away from your home and get them to recover it to the garage. The engine will overheat rapidly if there is air in the system, so driving it is not a good idea (unless your garage is very close).Aunt Trumpet wrote:So, do you guys/girls reckon it'll be ok to fill up with water and drive slowly to a garage for a check up? Good luck with your overheating.
