Free top problems

Post by JMH234 » Sun Apr 30, 2017 8:58 pm

Hi guys I hope you can help. Got a bongo a few weeks ago and have had no issues but put the free top up this afternoon and found that some of the connection points holding the fabric to the frame were broken are these easy to get and replace however the real problem is that the roof won't of can't come down. I have checked the safety wire to the hand break and it's not that is there a lock or switch I have missed etc. Any help appreciated.

Auto free tops come down in two parts. stops half way you can tuck in the roof tent if necessary. Press the switch a second time to bring the roof down fully. When I had a Bongo I always ran the engine when raising and lowering the roof to give the motors plenty of power.

As Mountaingoat says, there's a switch up in the roof near the light.

Start engine, press this switch, then the one used to raise and lower.

Half way down it will stop and you need the press the one in the roof again.

Also, check the handbrake is still applied, if neccessary check the little contact behind the brake lever.

I think for the broken bits people usually just use epoxy resin to glue them back together.

As the previous poster said the lock switch for the roof is in the roof on the edge of the light, you have to press that before you can start to lower the roof. It should start beeping when the button in the roof is pressed.

If you are getting the beeps when you press the "lock cancel" switch in the AFT there is a strong possibility that the "open close" switch in the cab is not making contact (common fault).

PS make sure you are pressing the Close function on the open/close switch.

Where in Scotland do you bide.

What type of Bongo do you have? a 2.5 Turbo diesel or a petrol (V6 or 2.0), 2WD or 4WD. Manual or automatic. Quite a few Bongo owners in your neck of the woods (although I am not one of them these day).

We have the occasional Bongo meet in Scotland, usually around Glencoe. I have to pass through Stirling and Callander to get there. Hope to meet up with you sometime, just watch out for meets on Bongo Fury and the Scottish Bongo Owners Facebook page.
