How to check if a Timing belt has been changed?

Post by Shebnpep » Thu Jun 17, 2021 12:41 pm

Hi all,
Apologies if this has already been asked. Brought a Bongo V6 a couple of weeks ago. Its now done 100k Km. Is their any way of visually checking if the timing belt has been replaced in the passed? If not, I will get this done soonest.
Cheers

Not really it should be hidden under the covers so not immediately visible anyway!
Go by age and/or distance ideally there should have been a label placed somewhere, often under the bonnet somewhere, with date/distance at the time of last change.

If it had been done I would have thought the seller would have shown you the invoice as a selling point.

If you're getting it done don't forget the water pump and cam seals, the parts aren't too dear but there's a lot of labour the get the pointy end of the engine appart.

Cheers Geoff/ Bob, if no indication under bonnet, I will need to get a small mortgage for the work.

Thanks for the guidance.
Doing NC 500 last week in July.
Just ordered Kit from the Bongo shop. Realise that the bash is on at the moment and delivery may be delayed, so have booked Kinloss garage to do it w/c 12th July. Just labour around 8 hours work. Circa £500.

If you can, its sensible to get them to change all 5 seals (cam & crank), both guidewheels, tensioner bearing and the hydraulic tensioner at the same time.
When they fail, its the same labour as the cambelt, all over again, to fix them.

Doone,
Thanks for the heads up. Just end to find out what all those extra parts will cost. Are we taking £500 or less?

Morning Doone,
I have ordered a 2.5l V6 cam belt kit from the Bongo shop already, does this kit not have the bearings in or am I missing the point.
Not mechanically upto speed yet.
Now worried I ordered the wrong part and other stuff needed to ordered. when you say
"5 seals (cam & crank), both guidewheels, tensioner bearing and the hydraulic tensioner at the same time." Is this a kit on its own?
5 seals, would the garage know what the 5 seals are?
Guide wheel bearings and tensioner bearings. Are these not the bearings mentioned in the kit.
5old by the Kinloss Garage to change the water pump at the same time, is that in the kit.
Sorry, just now getting very confused.
Perhaps I should not have bought the van without taking to you guys first.

👋 Sorry I don't know what's in Ian's kit. If you message him I'm sure he'll reply, though he's away at the Bash, so there may be a little delay. 😀

Doone,
Thanks for the advice. Since my post this morning, I have requested the Kinloss garage to assess the guidance from you guys and give me a price to use the Cam kit, replace water pump, supplied by them, in addition your suggestions. Of course have also asked them to ensure no duplication with the kit contents.
As you mentioned, whilst they have the relevant area stripped down, it makes perfect sense to renew future items.
In addition, she who should be obeyed, has seconded the work. So we're good to go. Just no Xmas or birthday presents for the next 5 years. :D

Much appreciated .
Best regards

Hi Doone,
Took your excellent advice.
All parts advised have been ordered, except the guidewheels. Could not find them on the Bongo shop.
Perhaps Ian will enlighten me on his return from the bash.
Best regards

Also, you might a better response in the Tech section of the forum. I'd guess people check that more often.

Once you've that work done, it'll be in lovely condition.
