Struggling to find Insurance

Post by timlongs » Wed Apr 01, 2015 2:44 pm

Hi all, firstly I'm new here, so hello all!

I've found a Bongo (well Freda) for sale for a very competitive price and I'm extremely tempted. It's the 1997 2.5L Diesel 4x4.

The trouble is I'm really struggling to find a good price for insurance. I'm 23, and have held my licence for 6 years, no accidents or offences.

I'm struggling to find anything for under £1000 - I've tried some of the recommended insurers posted on here and no one is coming up cheaper than that. Is it purely do to my age I'm too much of a risk? Quite annoying really - on normal cars I can get quotes for around £400 - even if I could get the Freda down to about £700 I'd probably go for it.

Any help?

Life sure

Have you tried insurance as a camper van
I should think it's because of the 8 seats and your age if a few insurance company's are all coming back high
Camper van conversions have less seats

The question might be - where do you live and where will you keep it?

I was quoted £1000, I fitted a small rear conversion so it now has a sink and gas hob cost about£150 to build.
Whist the DVLA may still consider it a MPV Adrian Flux and many others see it as a camper van so I now pay £200.
Its my second car and on a limited mileage policy.

Unconverted can be expensive especially with many of the camper specialists. If you already have a vehicle insured it is worth seeing if your current insurer will do a multi car discount.

I have Dog caging in mine but I told insurers all rear seats removed with fixings and this reduces cost dramatically as it reduces risk for personal liability claims

My son couldn't get insured for the bongo until he was 26! Now he's 26 and doesn't want to be insured for the bongo!
