MOT emissions failaure
Ideas please! Our 1998 petrol 2000cc Ford Freda has failed its MOT twice this week because the emissions are too high. Our mechanic who imports Bongos can find nothing wrong with it. Putting in fuel additive and getting engine hot do not cause emissions to fall. They are considering replacing the Mass sensor to see if this makes a difference but otherwise have no ideas. We love this van and had a summer worth of camping activities planned. Can anyone help please???

is your fuel from any particular supermarket. you could try some good stuff that burns better like bp ultimate etc. it could burn completely and quicker.
the thoughts behind this is if your injectors are blocked/dribbling the fuel doesnt atomize properly the larger droplets dont burn as completely, so are passed to the exhaust.

Is it high mileage ? (or kilometerage) When was your last engine service done ? I am thinking if it is burning oil (getting past the piston scrapers). Does it smoke from the exhaust or smell like it is running rich ?
Does the engine idle and run at speed smoothly ? i.e. no timing issues ?
(As mentioned elsewhere a high strength fuel additive like BG44K will need a good while in the system and a full tank burnt to have a carbon cleaning effect if it is that which is the problem, it will likely not happen an hour or 2 after it is put in there)
Just found this elsewhere worth a look at the exhaust system: "The brilliant chap there took one look at the print out and said "you've got a hole in your exhaust", took the car in, jacked it up and found that the bracket was knackered. (Apparantly this was letting air in to the exhaust system?) "
