Replacement ignition key

Post by Thatllbeme » Thu Jul 30, 2020 4:07 pm

Hello All,
First post so apologies if this already dealt with elsewhere.
After a suitable gestation period,(we bought our lovely 51 plate MPV pop top 2.5 V6 LPG conversion Aero 9 months ago), we're finally getting the chance to go and feed the midgies in Argyll in less than two weeks time. As part of the prep I was looking to have a second key cut, which induced chin stroking and head shaking but no key from our usual supplier. The key has a Mazda logo but I was told it doesnt match any of the blanks currently available, admitedly by a man who spends most of his time in the vicinity of solvent based adhesives. Is this the case? I have shoes older than our Bongo, he's been happy enough to keep them on my feet but isn't able to help keep our camper on the road. Any thoughts?
In addition, and again this might not be the right place, after looking long and hard for someone to work on the dodgy LPG system who was relatively local, (central Scotland), I found Martin Motors at Westfield near Cumbernauld. The owner Mick has owned 3 Bongos and has been good to deal with. There doesn't seem to be any Bongo specialists flagged up north of Hadrian's Wall, but this garage has been refreshingly communicative and resolved some issues that had been "overlooked" in a rather soft MoT from the seller within the time and estimated budget they gave me.

Welcome!
Timpsons seem to often have the blanks in.
Also from the mechanical diagrams;

Thank you Geoff,
I will give them a try, diagram with part number much appreciated.
Had looked online and nearest Timpsons allegedly in Glasgow, but on checking, the Kilmarnock branch is still trading, so they will be my first port of call.

In the back of my mind I seem to recal someone on here who could cut keys from a photo.

Anyone have any more info?

If you know the key number, there are 2 people who have cut keys from the number.

Key & Lock Services in Bournemouth 01202-526090.

And this ebay seller: https://ebay.co.uk/usr/telecommann
I think the ebay seller is the one who can cut a key from a very good photo?
Allan's closed. We recommend PGS (Plymouth Garage Services) or Mayflower Auto Services in Plymouth.

Thanks Bob,
There is a 5 digit number visible on the key so if Timpsons can't come up with the goods I'll go down this route. There's appreciable wear on the blade so the numerical code would probably give me a better fitting key.
I've been a bit of a lurker on the forum from even before we bought the Bongo last year and the helpfulness of longstanding forum contributors was a significant factor in our choice of campervan.
Thanks again,
Awrabest,
Paul.

Thanks Doone,
Inadvertently didn't include you in previous reply, I kid myself that doing this on my phone is straightforward, in reality I'm much more comfortable on the laptop.

Your suggestion was a good'un.
Timpsons just a few miles away in Kilmarnock were able to cut both the ignition key (for a very reasonable tenner)and the tiny key for unlocking the pop top roof clips (for a grudged seven quid). Down to Culzean Castle Estate for a run via small rural roads, this is where the Bongo is at its best as the hedges are now below eyeline and the countryside is in full panoramic display. Minor fly in the ointment, both front windows have gone on strike, time to look for the multimeter.

Excellent news! Yes it always pays to have a couple of spare keys kicking around!

Check the little switch, sideways across the bottom of the driver's window switches.

It's easy to knock it to 'off'.

Been there.

Dont know if all Bongos use the same key blanks but the Blanks for my 95 are for reference.

Silca Blanks = MAZ20REP or MAZ13T5
JMA Blanks = MAZ13DP1 (This one looks closest to my original)

The original Mazda key has a 5 digit number between 10100 & 12283 stamped on it that can enable a locksmith to cut a new key to code. This should be at the top of the key just next to the plastic bit.
