Bongo v6 wont start when it rains

Post by Stevejoy5 » Tue Apr 28, 2020 11:38 am

hi guys

Just a quick one to see if anyone else has had same issue ? The bongo turns over but will not start. If its dry its fine but as soon as it rains it will not go for ages i have to end up putting jump leads on and eventually it will fire on1 then 2 3 and 4. Before i go digging any ideas??

Thanks

Steve

Sounds like a bad case of damp. have you checked leads, coil etc for tracking or arcing? a good dose of WD40 all over the electrics may help.

No i havent but it seems odd that it could be getting wet given the location of leads and distributor.
Someone said there is a seal on distributor that maybe worn and allowing damp into cap.

The distributor is in direct line of fire for road splash, it probably creeps into the distributor as vapour then on cooler mornings condenses inside to water and shorts out.
Try removing each lead and cleaning, check the spark plug well at the same time, often oil and muck will gather in the bottom, the sparkplug connector can also suffer these were off of mine;

after cleaning each lead, clean the outside of the distributor cap at least, then spray with WD40 to help with the water dispersal.

Just reading through some older posts and came across this. Could it be a blocked drainage hole (channel at bottom of the windscreen) therefore overflowing onto some of the electrics?

Unlikely it overflows over the air con system nothing to do with the engine electrical items at all.
