Can You Tow with a Bongo?

Post by TobyT » Fri Nov 22, 2019 10:19 am

Hi,
A topic on a Facebook Forum, Mazda Bongo Helpful Group (UK), has recently had a person, Patrick Pedro Duffy, state that Bongos cant legally tow in this country because we don't have the Gross Vehicle Weight on the Vin plate???
Is this true ???

This is the statement:-To legally tow in the UK the vehicle needs to have a Gross Combined Weight on the VIN plate.
Imported vehicles like the Bongo do not have that, they only have the Gross Vehicle Weight, and as the only legally enforceable weights on UK roads for this class of vehicle are Axle Weights, Gross Vehicle Weight and Gross Combined Weight, in the absence of a Gross Combined Weight you are limited to the Gross Vehicle Weight.
I know Mazda quote 1600kg but that is not legally enforceable so as far as uk law is concerned it is irrelevant.
There are two trains of thought.
Your Bongo and any trailer attached cannot weigh more than the Gross Vehicle Weight.
You simply cannot tow with a Bongo.

Go figure!!

Toby, this a grey area which remains unresolved. It's been discussed on here before, see viewtopic.php?f=3&t=73876

I think the answer is that as long as your insurance company knows that you have modified your vehicle they will pay out in the event of an accident. But officious plod may see it differently.
