The UK is and was Founding Member of the WTO.
However we no longer have a seat, as we gave the seat up when we joined the EU.
It requires a full consensus of members to allow us to have a seat back, this is being resisted by China, USA, New Zealand and Moldova (TM refused a Moldovan diplomat a visa to the UK on a Trade Delegation would you believe!!).
Currently we have "Provisional" support from the other members .....

Although we need to ensure Hermann Goering is in charge for that happy outcome to be achieved i suspect. I seem to recall reading that the Me109 and its cannon could have inflicted far more damage if the Fat Git had not tied it so closely to bomber escort.

Yes indeed a confused strategy and tactics, to bomb London or not, to allow fighters free reign or purely as you say slow bomber escort vulnerable to RAF fighter attack,radar and all the while Hitler obfuscating things even more.

Apparently Moldova aren't going to back down on the veto-ing of the UK's membership of the WTO
All this business of WTO membership was made clear by the current government way back just after the vote. They stated that we would APPLY to join the WTO, and it would be a minimum delay to join, and trading without membership would only be an interim delay...but that isn't so...The UK might just have to wait a loooooong time . The only trade partner that will trade with the UK after leaving is Mauritania....so good luck!

Well, anyway, it doesnt matter now 'cos by a massive majority our glorious representatives have decided they don't want to sanction a no deal brexit. Apparently the UK does not have to apply for membership of the WTO as it is already a member in its own rights ( and has been since WTO and its predecessor, Gatt, was instigated) and not just as a member of the EU. This does not mean everything is straight forward as other WTO members can object to some of the UK's proposed dealing agreements if those agreements do not treat all other countries equally. There are lots of ifs and buts and can do's and can't do's but trading on WTO terms is the default position in the event of a no deal Brexit .

I write this as someone who does not profess to know all the ins and outs of any of the Brexit options but according to the web sites below the UK is definitely a WTO member in its own rights already. I warn you that before looking at the sites and all the links to other sites they include you might want to have a handy supply of paracetamol or a nearby wall on which to bang your head

If the UK leaves the EU on 29th March without a deal, parcels shipped to the EU will need customs clearance for exports and imports from this date. That means all shipments to the EU will require you to provide the following extra information:

Your EORI Number
Product 8/10 digit commodity codes
Accurate and detailed product descriptions
Contact information (email or phone)
Receiver's EORI Number (if applicable)
Other item-level details (Country of Manufacture, Item weight, Item value etc)
Shipment Value
