best setup for sleeping upstairs

We have just picked up our first Bongo... first campervan in fact. We are wondering what is the best way to set up for sleeping in the roof area. In our inexperienced eyes, it appears that if you had any sort of bed up there, the hatch would need to be blocked. All fine and dandy until someone needs a wee in the night. What have you seen or done that works well?

When we bought our Bongo, the owner threw in their used pee bottle (as above). We didn't keep it...

Absolutely. No way i was getting out in the middle of the night. And i was sleeping solo up there. Can't imagine what it'd be like with two people when one or other needed to exit and return in the night Some said i should just use a bottle, but then i have a bottle of water up there for sips in the night and i'd hate to get my bottles mixed up in a mid night confusion.

You'd just need a colour code, say blue for water, red for 'used'.

Although that may not work so well in the dark.

I'd definitely look into getting a catflap conversion (search around in here for details). It basically means that access to the roof is via a full-width flap that's at the foot end of the bed. Makes it WAY easier for one person to nip out in the night, and improves access generally. One of the best things we ever did for ours.

I assume yours still hinges on the original location at the rear of the bus ?

Yes I would get a pee bottle with a screw top, might be safest, you tend to kick containers over up top. I warn thee not to take a swig of my 2L
cider tank.



I use the original flip over Bongo mattress a couple of camping foam mattresses, and as many sleeping bags/quilt etc. 1-3 depending on season. I take my home pillows. If anything that board up there does wonders for my back, flat and supportive. I keep a solar camping lamp up there and carry a small solar torch on my belt, fling a fresh water bottle up there some tissues etc. Then you have everything you need.

In Autumn a fleece blanket is handy for putting over your face, cold face is not fun. And have an aviator style hat for keeping ears warm.

Sorry for late response... Yes! It's fine for me and the missus. The person staying in bed just has to move their legs out the way while you open the flap and nip through.

Oh... And yes... It still uses the original hinges

Ha ha yes. I didnt have that problem as i slept solo up there.
