Post by Stuie900 » Mon Oct 16, 2017 6:19 pm

Hi Im new here.
I dont have a bongo yet but Im looking. Im thinking of a none converted vehicle and doing the conversion myself to keep the cost down nothing to flashy though. Im hoping to get lots of buying tips and conversion tips. I have checked out the buying section on the website so I have a bit of a start. Im looking to spend around £4000.00 on a van and £1000.00 to £1500.00 to convert it

Welcome and happy hunting. Sounds v doable - just make sure you ensure you get a sound base vehicle.

Hello
Sound advice from Mike and Bob , a good base bus is the key , look out for rust and budget for coolant system servicing if there is no evidence of it being done . Otherwise they are a simple reliable bus .
best of luck with your search and keep us informed

Diesels are the one to watch as if overheated they are prone to cracking heads or blowing head gasket. But many have had no problem at all. They all have ageing coolant systems and some metal pipes that corrode though and no engine likes being run without coolant so preventative inspection and replacement is the key.

And use a Bongo Friendly garage for any work on the cooling system.

Far too many stories of cracked heads start with a someone who knows better that the guys on here.

The 2 ltr petrol is like any other vehicle regards cooling system, and the V6 must be bled properly but is less prone to cracked heads.

Mike and Bob are correct .
The cooling system is getting old now so is bound to be starting to give problems , get a GOOD bongo savy garage to completely assess the state of the entire system and replace anything that looks dodgy . I replaced all the components but my bus is old (95) and I'm a bit OCD when it comes to that sort of thing
If you look up coolant system service on here you'll see my posts on it .
I got most of the replacement parts from Ian in the club shop , i feel i got a really good deal =D>
Best of luck with your search
