Bongo virgin

Post by Mrmint359 » Fri Jul 28, 2017 12:42 am

Hello everybody!
After much searching for a day van/camper we discovered the wonderful world of the bongos!
It ticks all the boxes that we require and more!
I've looked at a few some good some awful but need a little advice
I've found a few that are fresh imports but how will registration work? Is this something the dealer will do or do I have to do it and what happens with insurance? Is it a problem or am I just worrying about nothing?
Any advice would be great!
Sorry if I've rambled on and hopefully see you soon at a bongo meet!
Lots of love

Hi,

If you are buying a fresh import then everything required to have it UK road legal will be done for you and when you collect you just check it out, pay the money over, sign on the dotted line and drive it away. There is one exception to this, an import scheme where you are basically responsible for everything, including its first MOT and these vehicles are considerably cheaper. I've heard of people who have got a good Bongo at a very reasonable price and others who have not had such a good experience. If you do go for a fresh import then whatever you do, get it properly Waxoyled, (not just a cheap underseal), including the cavities before it sees any salted roads because Japanese underbody protection is minimal. If you are considering a conversion don't! Use it unconverted for a while, possibly with an awning and you will then find out what you need and what you can live without. Then decide to convert or not.
Remember, Bongos are old vehicles now and as such they do need more regular maintainance and tlc than a modern Eurobox, but they more than repay that tlc by their versatility.

Excellent knowledge base on here and if you can't find the info you need using the search facility there are folks around who probably know more about Bongos than Mazda themselves.

Thanks for some really useful advice
I'm used to older vehicles maintenance as the berlingo van I'm driving is the newest car I've owned r reg and 301000 miles =D>
I'm guessing there's sharks in the import game too? Who can members recommend?
I'd rather see one than order one if that makes sense!
Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon, and a warm welcome. :D

Peter has given very good info above, can't improve on it. =D>

Quite a few dealers advertise on the main site, and Member's Ads can be a good source.

I've not heard bad reports of any of the well known players.

If you pop a rough location in your profile it's easier to offfer help.

I should think you'd find a good unconverted Bongo for that. 8)
