there was a theory that overheating could be caused by the bypass circute being blocked. this could be right but a simple way to check is to see if expansion tank is hot. If it is then bypass is ok co's this is the only input to the tank.

if stats were ment to have holes in them they would come like that. If you have to resort to this then there is a underlying problem. There are thousands of bongos running around for years with no overheating

jamesnjane... when bleeding the system you need to get the bottom hose warm co's that means the stat has opened and trapped air can escape..it does not always rise up through the little hole provided

Always premix your antifreez. 1, it is easier to keep track of %ages 2. more important, neat antifreeze is very thick and makes it much more difficult to bleed the system. I would think also that if you don't premix then untill the stat does one day open you are running around possibly with a weak mix

Peter.. When your rad froze it would stop the bypass from circulating through the top of the rad so boilup. Doubt it was anything to do with stat which wouldn't open at all under these conditions. Not enough antifreeze??? 50%??

again agreed,
Under normal conditions stat dosn't open, but, whilst standing at tickover and a few mins at 2500 revs , total time say 20 mins and system under pressure then stat will open

mikeonb4c, Hi there, if like you think, the needle on your guage "kicks off" co's your stats opening your bottom hose would get hot. It dosn't so it carn't be open. franco..I think you could well be right about the way the gauge works.

O>K> How about this.. Your temp gauge sits on zero before you start up co's the engine is cold therefore so is the sensor. You start up and it slowley rises to the 11 o clock co's that is what the engine is doing. At about this point the system pressurises and unless you start flogging the engine or...

The heat generated by the combustion of gases is what causes the engine to get hot. It would seem that about 60% of this heat goes out as hot gas down the exaust, whats left is cooled by the engine cooling system. In the case of the bongo diesel most of this is removed by the coolant bypass system/f...

Thats why the exaust is red hot. Co's it's taking heat away from the engine. The rad does not do any cooling on a Bongo under normal conditions, only when well stressed on a hot day ( and even then perhaps not)

Now then!! just got back from Allans Vehicle Services in Plymouth. I went down co's a month ago when he checked over Bongo for me, his hawkeye spotted that my tophose was bulging a bit and could do with replacing. That what I've been down there to get done today. Firstly, after driving down there (1...

I agree that in cool weather and gentle driving the stat does not open and the engine stays below temp. I also think that when bleeding it can be possible to leave a bubble of air just below the stat in the vertical bit of hose. When things do get a bit hotter and for whatever reason the stat opens ...

Well done for "sorting your problem" but have you? surley by drilling holes in your stat you are just hiding whatever the real underlying problem is. If you put the right stat in (82c) it should all be working without drilling holes. If it overheats then somthing is wrong and needs sorting...

the beeper is by the side of the drivers right foot. You can just unplug it till you sort out the cause of the beeping. It will do no harm to disconnect it.
