just had a look at mine and the dangling pipe in picture 2 should go to the EGR, follow (to the left) the metal pipe on the inlet manifold under the black cover and there should be a valve there.

well just looked at mine and can't see where it could be from but you could check the seals on the steering rack or the gearbox cooling pipes where they joint the bottom of the rad.

someone shoot me down again but isnt that the oil cooler that bolts on to the side of the block itself, it is a large casting with a load of bolts around its edge that holds it to the block using a gasket, try just tightening up the bolts first, but failing that take it off and replace or make a ga...

when mine did a similar thing to this it was the water pump. I was on the M4 at the time and the needle would travel to over half way and then back down to zero at around the same speed as your needle.
