Re: First non start for a long while...
I bought 1/2 inch Draper and 3/8inch Draper with some sockets £11 and £19 respectively. I think the 1/4 inch looks too small. I won't know until I get in there. I will report on what works best for other people who may have future starter troubles. Well at least I am not all sorted for ratchets into...

Re: First non start for a long while...
I have the parts, just 2 copper L shape bits and a plunger..... and a new high quality rachet which is very small, hope it can exert enough force on the bolts to undo them (WD40'd again today for good measure). Ratchet is 1/4 inch, as were my 12mm sockets, but it looks like you need quite a small on...

Re: Allan's Vehicle Services
That is not good news at all, he did a great job when we needed a new head. Fewer expert repair people is not a good thing. I feel quite sad about it really. Things changing are rarely good as you start stacking up the years.

Re: First non start for a long while...
I was just taking a look/planning a WD40 squirt in readiness It is not the easiest to see right now as air intake is on. I can see 3 bolts in position of the video and they look pretty heavy duty might be 10-12mm heads, (video does say 12mm) are the bolts holding on the starter motor going through t...

Re: First non start for a long while...
I'll just pop these bits here for reference as well, so they are all in one place for people. I forgot the seat will have to come out. Ok to do air filter with it in but not this job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H53kKDBDEZI&ab_channel=itmustbeian And this old post about the same thing. https...

Re: First non start for a long while...
I am getting my head around it now after watching the video again and understanding there is just 1 not 3 plungers (as per the ebay pic)... 1 plunger/piston and 3 copper things to replace. I will photo it all before I disassemble for sure. And take notes. I am not very confident with cars I can do t...

Re: First non start for a long while...
Is the plunger thing the "piston", and it is just the copper small bits that are replaced ? (are they the actual contacts) The images are rather confusing, the cheap kit shows more parts but says "contacts only".. no plunger so I expect that is why it is cheaper. So there are not...

Re: First non start for a long while...
Actually I also found this with many more parts in... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293191698249?hash=item4443964749:g:TxAAAOxy8HlSdC7l Cheaper but more parts, did I get the right one ? I ordered the one in the link supplied but found this by chance looking at the other products that place on ebay had.

Re: First non start for a long while...
Another reason is that I saw a poor review for the starter motor I was planning to buy on ebay at 94.99 no names mentioned, German sounding but apparently assembled in Birmingham. On this basis keeping the original Mazda part seems like a sensible plan. (but you know plans...?? !!!) I guess somethin...

Re: First non start for a long while...
I went out and started the van 30mins ago, I awiated the amber light to go off for glow plugs. Turn key all the way and "click" thne nothing.. turned it again and it started. Ran it 15mins just to put juice back into battery. So it would appear it is the solenoids, maybe. So ordered the ki...

Re: First non start for a long while...
New OEM starter is about £100.00, it does seem to point in the general direction and I have had my inklings starter might be starting to play up over the last year with a few hesitant starts. (one click/noise and then nothing until I try again and in engages) Although this tiem, zero was heard. (Bat...

Re: First non start for a long while...
Previous poor starts or hesitatnt starts weeks and months before every now and then..twice in total I heard what sounded like the starter lurching but not catching (if that makes any sense at all) so like one loudish noise then silence, then when I turn ignition again within 1-2 second after it turn...
