Check the connection on the back of the speedo one may be loose, if you have a chip try with out that, that may be the cause of the flashing and speedo not working,

the smoke depends on the colour .

not sure on a bongo but on a landt freelander it had a viscus coupling like the bongo and the test was just as you subscribed but the was rear wheels as the lock ups and fronts as perm drive Another way to test if its not locked up would be to mark eiter side of the vc with chalk so they line up and...

I was a bit bothered by the fuses blowing but with willintons 50 amp inlines I thought it worth a try.

the smaller 30 amp supplied by some others I have seen may not do so well
