When i purchased my fully built up head I found all the valve clearances miles out ...

Re: Help!! I think i've cooked the cylinder head.

thats very interesting,so are you saying that the gasket and head are/were fine, apart from the fact that the cam pedestals are out of line.
the motor must have been running on the edge(probably generating to much heat) until the hose went and lifted the head a tad more thus trapping the cam.

Re: Help!! I think i've cooked the cylinder head.

Yeah funny you should mention that because I've got service doc's stating cam belt was changed About 15k miles ago but the belt looked well worn & not far off failing so it must of been working hard. All valve's & pistons are intact.

Re: Oil, Oil filter, Air filter & other maintenance

One other thing to remember about oil is that its hyroscopic (not sure i spelt it right but it mean absorbs water) so your oil is deteriating from the moment its pured in no mater how little miles you do.

Re: Help!! I think i've cooked the cylinder head.

From all the information I've got now i'm pretty sure I know why the engine failed.
Sometime in the past before i purchased it(only had the bongo 6 months) this head has overheated & distorted the head. It was skimmed up then refitted back. When the camshaft snapped in half at the middle bearing(Its ...

Re: Help!! I think i've cooked the cylinder head.

I checked the pistons 3 + 4 where of the same depths as 1 + 2 as the latter was not affected by the camshaft breakage.

Re: Help!! I think i've cooked the cylinder head.

Have finally got round to taking the head. Cleaned it up & visually it looked ok no cracks etc but decided to have it checked out by having it inspected by a local engineering firm that specializes in engine rebuilds. They armed with a straight edge took one look at it and said it had been badly ...

Re: Help!! I think i've cooked the cylinder head.

Forget the sniffer test whatever happened inside the engine when it went bang has broke the cam shaft clean in half -photos to follow. With the help from Northern Bongolow who lives locally, we set about to find route cause of the coolant leak in the first place. this turn out to be perished hose ...
