In my experience and as a rule of thumb, when charging a car battery it is advisable to disconnect it from the cars electrical system.
Only just purchased a new vehicle battery charger at the weekend and it is written in the instruction/guidine booklet that was in the box.

Its good Mazda tech so providing its been looked after should be trouble free motoring. I hear claims of 28 to 35 mpg here on the forum, only had a diesel and v6 petrol myself so can only go off that.

Age and mileage are less important than condition and price. I wouldn't pay a lot for a young, low mileage example that hasn't been maintained properly, just because it was new and had a low mileage.
