Had a similar problem where the engine on my 2000 V6 suddenly became much noiser. Tried an oil change and then added some Wynns additive as it sounded like noisy tappets/lifters. No better. The engine produced the same noise whether it was hot or cold, so I did not think it was a piston problem ...
