Re: Mechanics have run out of ideas on how to fix cooling sy

Hi there, I owned a Bongo auto free top 2.5 td for 6 years in NZ, from 80,000km, to 190,000km. unfortunately, your first mistake is trusting a garage to know how to empty, refill and bleed the bongo system, which is a 18 step process that takes me 2 hours, plus cool down period, then top up again. F...

Re: V6 petrol vs diesel - long term pros and cons

V6 has soft valve stems... high mileage ones will become smokey.. mazda recommend 15,000km oil change intervals, it should be way less than this for longevity of the engine.. We have lots of the V6 engines here in 929 and other people movers, and the V6 is thirsty and smokey when old, even some with...

Re: Lowered Suspension

Also bear in mind that significant lowering could affect the position of the body relative to the axle as the panhard rod is a fixed length Part 28-650 in the diagram below http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/code=2800A&cat=a2ajra0a&vin=&imgno=01of02.html#9 true, you get wear on t...

Re: roof racks

How heavy are your kayaks? I think the factory AFT mount points are rated for 70 kg, but if you put long length rails in the AFT channel, which can be secured at several points along the roof, it shouldn't be a problem.. the AFT roof is seriously built... you can stand on top of it... However, the b...

Re: Overheating? cold bottom hose head over 110 celcius

depending on the ambient temperature, you can check the circulation of coolant just by driving for at least 15-20 minutes, then park and leave it idling. check the top and bottom hose temperature. Sometimes I can drive 10km even at 40-50 km before it is warm at the bottom hose. If you drive at 100 k...

Re: Is rust in the coolant OK?

Use some radiator flush and leave it in for at least 50km, last time I flushed mine. Worth flushing the system, heaters on full, then reconnect and run for a minute or two, let the water circulate, then stop the engine, and reflush, with a hose in the header tank. I also used some antileak radiator ...

Re: Tyre pressures

I noticed going from 32 at the back to 38 had a dramatic improvement in the handling, the van was just really soggy and rolly around corners, but 36-38 is much better... depends on the brand/type of tires you have at the back, and probably the profile too..

Re: Tyre pressures

I find 35 on the fronts 38 on the back is about right.. (2wd bongo with orginal size tyres (195/70/15 fronts 215/65/15 rears) keep in mind that if you pump the tires up too much, you will wear your swaybar droplinks out quicker, you will find that the correct pressure on the back tires still leaves ...

Re: Oil, Oil filter, Air filter & other maintenance

I thought I'd just mention an article I read in the Velocette OC magazine by someone who had been on, or knew someone on the design team at Fram Filters. In a nutshell, beware of changing oil filters more often than necessary. The particle size that the filter can trap reduces with age, which is an...

Re: Oil, Oil filter, Air filter & other maintenance

I always replace oil and filter at the same time for all my vehicles. Why wouldn't you? :-k The Pela pump is fantastic: 20min for the whole job! The filter is about the same price as the oil, so change the filter every second time to save a bit of money, the filter will still be working effectively...

Re: 2.5 Diesel Turbo Lifespan?

Also keen to hear of anybody who has had to replace their TURBO on the diesel engines at some point. Being so hot here it is not uncommon to see the occasional turbo pouring smoke and costing it's poor owner many dollars to replace. Hi, It might be worthwhile fitting a Turbo Timer. Cheers.. Re: Show us yer insides

My stimpson style layout.. homebuilt... I like it because standing at the back of the van and cooking is way easier on my poor back than being inside and sitting or bending down... The bench seat is still comfortable enough to sit on, and not too bad for sleeping on, its kind of a compromise. If it ...
