you can test the glow plugs without removing them from the head. simply remove the connecting link from the top of all the plugs, remove the live link and battery connection first, then get a multi meter with a resistance setting, positive to the top of the plug, negative to the head really close to the bottom of the plug on the head casting then look in the manual for the specified resistance that should be seen on the meter, outside of the spec given means its duff.

Yes, that was my plan. I have been caught out in the past when the resistance was all identical but I still had problems (different car). Upon removing and testing one was clearly different to the others. However I find it to be a good initial test and if they have can open circuit and failed altogether it is very obvious with the multimeter.

I just couldn't get to the rear ones. Will remove the seat fully and remove the bit that holds the solenoids so that I can access them.
