making an insurance claim and losing your ncb

Unfortunately I scraped someone else's car and now have a repair cost of £500 #-o . We only have 1 year of no claim bonus as this is only our second year of owning the Bongo and have not previously owned a vehicle. When I have shopped around for insurance some have refused to insure us as it is our only vehicle and have so little ncb. My concern is that if I make a claim now then we will be penalised with a very expensive premium for the next few years or even worse, no one will be willing to insure us. We have no excess to pay this time but at what real cost in the future? Does anyone have any ideas on how our premium might change next year if I do make a claim? I am tempted to pay myself for the repair and move on....

Insurance companies are in the business of Taking not Giving. Usually you claim now and pay later, but really the choice is yours .

Good Luck.

You commit an offence if you don't report any kind of bump to your insurers, it may seem like a good idea to keep quiet but it is likely to bite you. :(

The other driver will likely have reported it and started the ball rolling.

Why not go incognito  and ask for a quote giving those circumstances and see what they come up with?
If they ask for a reg number give them something from an Ebay ad and tell them your thinking of buying it.
Not dishonest is it just market research.

Oh, and ask them what additions would be for protected NCB.
Good luck

I have 30 years of accident free driving
And when I went to insure my bongo 5 years ago
I found my LANDROVER had been on a classic insurance policy so I'd lost all me no claims , had me own van insured aswell as a car for 20 years, and now I have NO no claims
I went absolutely ballistic at them , they never told me I was not getting me no claims or that me proof of no claims was lost

My new insurance company contacted my old insurance company for proof of insurance for me and quoted me on that
Very nice lady from lifesure (brokers Huntingdon area)
About £280 I think
I'm still with them at about £230 and not getting any no claims on this policy I don't think as its 5000 miles limit per year second vehicle etc
SSShhhhh I only own the bongo now ( but do have acces / use of another vehicle ) me skateboard
Don't know what happend to me van no claims
But it's not made much of a differenc insuring bongo with out
Cheapest I've heard of people getting insured is £130 ish

Having a similar fun time with NCBs and more than one car. Have the rules tightened up recently. I have had two large engine high insurance group vehicles at the same time for ages. One high mileage for work, one my fun vehicle. Never had any problems with NCB before its always been mirrored to have it on both. Five years ago I came down to just one, the Bongo. Working from home and no longer needing to rack up the miles.

I decided to add another car a couple of weeks ago. Bongo fuel guzzling plus being shut out of too many car parks. Set out to find something sensible. Ended with a VW cabriolet. Insurance quotes looked fine. Then I hit problems. The Bongo is on a motorhome policy, which has locked my NCB. I expected I would be allowed a car as well as this specialist insurance. Try getting a VW insured with no NCB. Spent most of the day trying to sort this Admiral multi car. quoted for the Bongo, then claimed they could not insure it converted as it had been modified. Insuring it unconverted was also not on as they did not insure vans. Hope this was ignorance rather than policy.

Finally got my mirrored NCB discount through a local broker and Bongo moves to Classic Car insurance on renewal. Insurance companies seem back to the fifties. A second camper van Shock Horror the immorality of it all. Plus trying to get through the lack of a NCB is de to their action not to me keeping hitting things.

I would not bother with multi-car policies, Admiral and alike, they usually work out far more expenisve, I have individual policies on my vehicles.

For a £500 claim, I would think it is no way worth loosing your NCB for! Try and pay for the work yourself and say nothing
