Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
The garage which MOTed our Bongo went on to service it. They replaced the fuel filter and now it starts, runs for a minute and then conks out. The mechanic says it's air locks which 'sometimes happens when you change the filter'. He's been 2 days at it without success. My question is did he introduce the fault or can he argue it's just one of these things in an old vehicle? Also, should it take this long?

Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
which engine is it.
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Presuming you are talking Diesel ,it would be a good idea to fit another new filter if not already done, if this does not cure the fault they could remove the complete filter housing with filter attached and carry out a Pressure Test.
Or simply By-Pass the filter assy completely, ( For Test Purposes Only.) Also check the "Banjo Filter" if not already done.
Good Luck.

Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Thanks for that which I'll check with the mechanic. Yes it is a diesel. But I'm concerned at the time this is taking. Is he justified in charging, when it was driving and starting fine before?
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Coincidences do happen, but if its proven to be filter related and the garage has supplied the parts or caused any damage to the filter assy then they are not entitle to charge you for remedial labour or materials.
Good Luck.

Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Not changed one myself but I think I read somewhere to fill the new filter with diesel before fitting - this helps to prevent airlocks.
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Well, I passed on all your good advice to the mechanic, but 3 days later and still no joy. Can it typically take a week to diagnose this kind of problem? What's the worst can happen? Replace fuel filter (again)/fuel pump/ fuel lines? Is this expensive to do? I'm having difficulty reconciling what seems to be a small problem with the length of time this is taking. We're meant to be away to Ireland in a week's time!
Any advice about what I can do? It's in Glasgow 200 miles away. Should I relay it up to where we live for a second opinion? But I'm worried that the Glasgow garage has introduced some major problem, so they should really fix it. Are there specialists for this kind of problem?

Have they cleans out the banjo filter As has been said
It's a little mesh filter in the fuel pump easy job
But some won't know it's there
Pulled out with two cotton buds taped together long ways

What is the name /address of the garage in Glasgow.?
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
We had just this problem on our old Bongo following fitting a fuel filter from a well known Bongo parts supplier. The filter was primed with diesel but the engine kept mis firing. On refitting the old filter the Bongo went straight back to normal.
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Teenmal, they're nice guys (although frustrating), I don't want to blacken their name! Tony, that's useful to know - did you ever manage to get a new one fitted?
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Elbow pipe - yes I did get it fixed by buying another filter which worked just fine.
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Yes you are correct, I meant to say PM me as I might know the garage an could maybe help them...Elbowpipe wrote:Teenmal, they're nice guys (although frustrating), I don't want to blacken their name! Tony, that's useful to know - did you ever manage to get a new one fitted?
Did you /the mechanic try this as was previously mentioned, it seem to cover a lot of possibilities ..

Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Took off filter. The sensor that screws into the bottom of the filter should have a rubber seal. That was missing. I think because the thread on plastic thingy was partially stripped and if you put on a ring you can't screw it on. Anyone know what that's called so I can order it because can't fit ring seal until I have a full thread?
Re: Air lock introduced by new fuel filter
Its called a fuel filter sensor assy, part No WL0113ZA6.you should be able to get this part from bongospares.com or fit a suitable plastic blanking plug meantime.
Good Luck
