I took our trusty 2.5TD to Aberdeen & back yesterday, trundling along nicely except for a bit of traffic in Aberdeen itself and in Dundee both ways. Brimmed the tank before I started and then near Dunfermline on the return, recorded 723.3km (449.4 miles) on the first tank and 58.37 litres (12.84 proper gallons) to refill it, which equates to 35mpg which I'm quite pleased with, not bad for an old oil-burner. On the basis that the tank is supposed to be 65 litres, that means I could have nursed another 50 miles before needing to test the self-priming feature of the fuel system

You make me wonder if something is wrong with ours!
Our recent long trip didn't really get any more MPG than round town! I reckon we got about 26-27mpg on our return journey from Cornwall. It was easy to calculate as I brimmed it before leaving and then had to fill it up again half an hour before we got home as I wasn't sure we would make it!
We did have a full load, along with the roof rack and roof box on the roof. The journey was more or less three roads for the majority of the journey, we drove at night with very little traffic - just sat at 70mph for endless miles upon miles!
Not sure how much the rack/box reduces mpg?

I'd say that the roof gear and 70 instead of 55/60 would make a significant difference.

The last 13k miles iv'e averaged 26.3mpg

inc towing and last 3k restricted to 50mph not get above 27mpg
21500km on clock
is this realistic or am i doing something wrong.

I think the above are all typical, for my figures in the first post I was purposely only doing 50-55mph and taking it as economically as I could. 70mph and with added wind resistance will make a huge difference.

I've just had an interesting one. 33mpg Manchester to SE London on a journey where I did 65-70mph when road allowed, but had long tailback at Birmingham and Friday afternoon traffic through London. Aircon on a fair bit of the time. 3 people in car, light luggage. Quite surprised at that fuel economy.

Our other car is a 59plate Petrol Mondeo. That gets around 28mpg as an overall average, but the difference with that is that when I do, do longer journeys it can get up to 40mpg.
