Anyone in Fife or Edinburgh willing to hire/lend a pela pump

Post by petenbex » Mon May 12, 2014 11:54 am

HI Guys I have just bought a caravan and it has prompted me to change the gearbox fluid, I am in Rosyth and wondered if any of you kind folks who are local to me might be willing to hire/ lend a pela pump?

Cheers

You have a gearbox in your caravan? :).

To do the job properly you should drop the pan, remove filter & clean the metal off the magnet. A Pela will help get rid of most of it before unbolting the pan as generally, there is no drain plug fitted.

Try Gordon (AKA The Laird). He is up your way & (I think) was trying to sell a Pela for ages, so you may get a bargain if he still has it. Alternatively, you can get a Silverline one for around the £20 mark.

Are you a wee bit worried about the box overheating when towing, if so your best bet is to fit an oil cooler.

Pm Alacrity if you want some Expert advice .He also supplies cooler kits.

Thanks for the replies guys, I tried a cheap one this morning but couldn't get it to start pumping, maybe the fluid wasn't warm enough but I was worried about it being too hot that it would melt the tube. :( Also the container it had with is was only a litre and thought that if I could get hold of something bigger it would save a lot of messing.

Teenmal you've confused me now (doesn't take much), I thought my Freda already has a cooler fitted as per the advise about half way down this page

http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/fox_archives3.htm

I certainly seem to have 3 radiators at the front end 2 large and 1 smaller one at the bottom with its own air scoop? Or did you mean beefing up the existing one?

Cheers.
Pete.

The three rads are normal engine cooling, condenser for aircon and the low down scoop is for the intercooler.

Bongy has some cooling for the auto box oil but only in the bottom of the main rad.

As suggested I would (have) fitted an extra oil cooler, Alacrity is your man or google Kenlowe.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have pm'ed Alacrity to get more info about the added cooling system.

Gordon I have been offered the use of a pump so I will try it out and see if it's something I want to add to my tool kit so I might get back to you.

I've read the fact sheet and had some useful advise so looks like I'm all set.

Thanks again, this forum is awesome. =D>

It's something I'm very glad I bought - I get more oil out of the other car using the pela than I do dropping the sump plug!

Just as long as you don't add mine to your toolkit... [-X

Big thanks to Matt for the use of his pela =D> , got the job done on Saturday. I am gonna think about the extra cooling, probably will add it but need to save a few pennies as there are other jobs to be done first. Not planning any long haul trips with the caravan till the end of the summer so....

Thanks again chaps
