This rear facing Group 1-2 childs car seat fits a Bongo!

Post by Doone » Sat Apr 29, 2017 7:45 pm

After months of searching and trying numerous seats in the Bongo, my daughter has found a Group 1-2 rear facing childs car seat that fits the Bongo. It uses the standard 3-point seatbelt, without twisting the seatbelt.
It can remain rear facing until the child is age 4 -5 approx.
It's the Axkid Minikid car seat.

My daughters Bongo is a 1996 AFT. Allan (Allans Vehicle Services) checked the installation procedure. It was held to the Bongo’s front facing middle seat, using the 3-point seatbelt and auxiliary belts (that anchor to the front seat base) and a neat support bar in the footwell. He said he's not aware of any model Bongo that doesn’t have these fixing points as standard.

It wouldn’t attach in the same way onto a Bongo seat that has been turned around (rear facing). So you'd have to contact a supplier for advice.

Info about the seat, from the websites:

Key Benefits of the Axkid Minikid include:

The Minikid can be installed rear-facing with a 3-point seat belt and used for children weighing 9-25 kg.
The Group 1-2 seat is approved according to ECE R44 rev 04 safety standards. It's also Plus-test approved; This is a Swedish test procedure and is one of the most rigorous tests for rear-facing car seats.

Seat dimensions:
W:44cm
H: 61cm
D: 56cm
Weight: 11.2kg

Integrated 5-point harness and head rest which automatically adjusts to perfectly fit your child.

Unique tether strap tightening function.

Five reclining positions for maximum comfort.

Deep side wings for extra side impact protection

Extra long support leg to enable installation in a wide variety of vehicles.

Seat cover machine washable in 30º

The company came to her house and fitted the seat for is a small family business, based in Plymouth, Devon. They will supply and fit the seat for anyone locally, or who comes to to them.

They'll also post it to you and you can order from their website. :D
They said they would happy supply extra instructions, for how to fit it in a Bongo, if you let them know it's for a Bongo! 8)
My daughter found the seat cheaper online and they matched that price. =D>

Here's the seat on their website:

Edit: Since posting, the website appears to have become faulty. Here's a link to the seat: http://www.axkid.com/product/minikid/

Well done Lorna. =D>

This comes up on here from time to time so possibly this would be a valuable Sticky or Fact Sheet.

Good idea Bob. My daughter had a rear facing baby seat (birth - 13kg) which is now almost too small. It was fitted with the extra wrap of the seatbelt, which she wasnt entirely happy with, but needs must in a Bongo. [-o<
This seat fits until age 4 -5 and the seatbelt isn't twisted. =D> It's now been added to FAQ, so the information should remain easy to find. Ian could add this one to the members car seat factsheet, as there's no rear facing 1-2 car seat on it. :)
The challenge is now to find a rear facing seat that fits a Bongo from childs birth to age 4/5, without the extra twist in the seatbelt.

EDIT: This link gives details on professionally shortening the seatbelt, so a wider variety of seats may fit. And mentions more childseats that fit a Bongo: viewtopic.php?f=62&t=73878
