Sleeping up top.

Post by Bonnybobby » Wed Jul 03, 2013 10:19 am

Has anyone got some good examples of getting rid of the hatch and using boards so you can check on the children whilst asleep? We would like to change it and would appreciate some top notch ideas. Thanks.

Try a search for Cat Flap there are a couple of ways changing the access which seem to work well people.

321-away also do a cut right across the roof, if you search for it. We had it done and its been great. They can do the job in a short time too as they have a few ready made so just change the roof in yours for one already done.

Happy camping.

We used ordinary bed boards (two bits of wood cut to fit the space where the roof/floor goes up with about a foot of space at the end for access). Can measure them if you like - they are now sitting redundantly in the garage.

We now have the "cat flap" having made a special 500 mile round trip to 321 Away although needless to say, two years down the line, our son is capable of going up and down into the roof in the manner which Mazda intended. It's very good, though.

If you're good with wood there's also this http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 62&t=30790

and there's this http://www.clearcutconversions.co.uk/co ... ation.html

and quite a few other posts on the forum.

We have removed rivets on hinge from ours simple to knock out with a nail. So flap can just be pushed up to open.

As with Levon, 321-away cut the roof for us - which effectively turns the section with the hatch into a board. It requires a small alteration to the roof mats if you've got those, but nothing major.

Our children sleep happily with the end section of the roof raised (towards the back of the van), which makes it much easier for us to get to them in the night.

If you get the proper cat flap from 321 away does the original hatch still work so you can utilise the roof window for extra light when the roof is down? Also can you still hinge the whole roof upwards for head room during the day?

Yes, you can. It's no different from before, other than the "floor" of the roof is in three pieces rather than two.
