Rear 3 point seatbelts.... newbie help please.

Post by hutchie » Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:58 pm

Hi
We are hoping to become a Bongonauting family soon :D . But we are getting different views on whether we can have 3 x 3 point seat belts in the rear of the camper. We foster 3 young children, ages 7,3 & 2 and we therefore need legal 3 point seat belts for them all. We want our Bongo to be our everyday vehicle, but also have a midway or rear conversion so we can take off (with an awning) for weekends away. If anyone has 3 full seat belts in there Bongo, please can you let me know what layout you have, photos would be really appreciated or if you can recommend where we can have a good conversion done, that would be great too. Thankyou for this great forum. x

Hi, welcome onboard the Bongo train

My Bongo is uncoverted so will seat 6 in the back, 4 of these being the 3X3 points that you are looking for.

I guess that if you take out any seats for a conv you will need to get a 3X3 added to the remaining bank.

Hope thats helps

Hi to have the middle seat a 3 point belt methinks you would have to have split rear seats so as to facilitate an anchor point for the belt like the outer belts

Without going to a great deal of trouble and expense the best you will get in a Bongo is six three point belt - 2 each on front, centre and rear seats. On a 7 seater "flip up" seats Bongo you will get an extra lap only belt on the middle seat and on an 8 seater fixed seat Bongo you will get lap belts in the middle of both centre and rear seats.

Trying to add extra 3 point seats is not impossible, just difficult and fraught with possible insurance questions.

Hi,

My advice is to visit a specialist company that converts vehicles for disable poeple. They are used to having to install belts in many configuration and many different anchor points. You would then be able to supply any insurer evidance of proffesionally fitted belt.

Cheers.

I fitted one on my middle bench seat. It can be done, and has to be better than a lapbelt I reckon, but it wouldn't pass any official test i'm sure.

Likewise for my 2-seater middle bench, the seat next to the kitchen has a 3-point belt integrated.

With the covers off, the frame at the top of the seat is very flimsy - just a thin vertical steel sheet. I added a 30mm² bar up the side of the seat to take the top mount.

So, it looks OK, and it's certainly an improvement over a basic lap belt. However, the shoulder point is a little low for tall adults, and there is of course a risk that the backrest hinge will collapse under impact.

well dont know if your like this idea we got a six seater side conversion but in the back there only one 3 piont seat belts but cuse one set of seats have been trun the kids travel on them so there back are to us with lap belts ill fell that with lap belkts traveling that way it ok an safer then a lap top facing forwards ie in a crash there go in to the back of the seat if you know want i mean.

but i did see that on bongo mad sismon he fitted 4 3pionts seat belts might be a idea and give them a call the same coversion just diffent seat belts where done by clearcut conversion

you can see bot mine and siomons as well as the rest in here http://igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/view ... e&start=15

yes they are both full side conversion but know he does others as well an will change to how you like it done.

agian are these legal? your have to ask rich
think there a diffent from legal an safe ???????

Thankyou for all your helpful replies.... Alan, I love yours and Simons conversions and have emailed Clearcut to see if they could do a full conversion with 3 seat belts for us - fingers crossed. We will then have to start looking for a lovely unconverted Bongo to take down to Devon - how exciting :D

I think a simple solution to your problem would be to retain both rear benches. This would give you 6 full seatbelts, you could then fit a small kitchen unit across the back of the van. This is what I have done, if you send me your email address I will post some pictures to you.........martin

Might something like this work. They are based in the states but worth considering.
