Heaters

Post by Bongolia » Sun Oct 23, 2016 4:01 pm

I would like to hear what heaters other than the OE ones Bongo owners use. I am interested in non EHU types.
Thanks.

Searching for heaters I found this on the Truma site. it would appear to suit my needs well.
No fan or electrical requirement just radiant convection, heat output 1.8 Kw, small L 420 W 120 H 365 ,will fit into the opening left by the old rear heater, and the best bit is its 325.00 ukp brand new.
Down side is the case gets hot so may be awkward at close quarters I would need to call their tech on that.
Anyone on here used these?
I am wondering if a copper loop could be fitted behind the front panel to allow warming of water using thermo syphon or at a push pump assisted.
Would need the heater to be on of course.

It would need to be vented to the outside,to get rid of the burnt gasses, would also need to be sealed properly to prevent co2 leakage to the inside of the Bongo

Yes there is a ventilator fitting kit that comes with it.
It looks fairly tidy and not overlarge. Would come out about 18inches behind the driver door and about 18 inches up from the sill.
Both exhaust and burner intake are outside the van.
The attraction is that it needs no energy other than the gas.

That type of heaters are in the older caravans
Work ok
But with the fan option they are real good
Pretty sure a water loop would not work
You risk boiling it dry when not in use and if you make it a sealed water system you have made a BOMB ( trust Me )
Also that would not burn enough gas to produce enough energy to heat running water

The front of them will require a far bit of clearance aswell so could not be boxed in
And where does it get it combustible air supply from ( you might have to install a air vent to outside aswell )

Not looking good for a bongo in my professional opinion

I was hoping you would pick the thread up. :D
On the water side of things I was thinking more along the lines of a flat zig-zag(for want of a better description) small bore tube , the lower end feeding from the bottom of the water tank and the top end dropping back into the top of the tank. I was thinking that it may just thermo syphon and warm the water in the tank (vented), do you think that a viable proposition?

Combustion air is drawn in from under the van or through the side, optional, and obviously exhausted to the outside.
Your point about the clearance is probably gonna kill it. How hot is hot, take your skin of hot or very hot?
Would you think it feasible to insulate ,Kingspan or similar, the lower un-vented portion?

Thanks Gasy

Technically yes it would Thermomete cycle to a storage tank
That's the old fashion gravity hot water style we used to put in houses with floor standing boilers
The problem is that heater will have the flames inside a sealed metal tube you would have to wrap the micro bore copper pipe along or around this
And with the heater being thermostatically controlled it would work to van temp and not water temp
All you would probaly end up doing is warming the water up to legionella breeding temperatures
And never getting it to 60c to kill
The storage tank would have to be close and at same height or above
With out seeing how much gas it burns / btu
I don't think it would heat water tank

You are also then not to manufacturers instructions on installation
Same as putting heat proof material over the front not to M.I (manufacturers instructions)
Then if you kill your self its your fault :D

I have always fancied the hot water via the system fitted in B.T vans
A small hot water cylinder fitted in engine bay heated by engine cooling water( appear on eBay once in a while)

You can also get ones which are all in one and hang on inside of work vans ( fold up sink ,tap. Water storage and immersion heter ) all in one unit ( again second hand on eBay all the time )
It's alot of work for a saucepan of hot water to wash up / wash with

Yes the front used to get fairly hot in the old caravans I had with them in
Don't think it would take your skin off from what I rember but you wouldn't leave anything leaning against it

Quick look at the downloads and see they do a Truma combi
That does your blown air heating and your instant hot water all in one unit
It is a concealed unit and looks a lot deeper than that heater shown in your pic
But that would really kick out some heat and hot water

Even tho there's no vents / openings/ grill at the bottom of that heater
It will be open to let the cold room air in the bottom to pass over the sealed flames in the tube inside which will heat it to come out the grill at top as warm air
They are very safe as its room sealed flames ( flames are inside the exhaust tube really)
And the room air passes over this tube to be heated
So the bottom of the heater needs to be left open to room air

Cheers Gasy hadnt considered the legionella thingy.
I think I am buggered with that heater by the sounds of it. I will take a look at the other Truma combi.
I am with you that it isnt much effort to boil a kettle. :)
I will probably fit the Propex at the end of all this its a bit noisy is all and it draws a couple of amps for the blower too. Maybe I can fit a silencer. :D
Thanks for your advise and suggestions.
