Currently I have a full width bed which is really comfy, and I just use a camping gas stove and a washing up bowl. I decided that this year I would go ahead with a side conversion made by a local company who make GRP / fibreglass conversions in lovely colours. I chose the colour last year and bought vinyl flooring to go with it (still in a roll in my hallway). Unfortunately the guy who makes them has 'disappeared' for a while and I have got nowhere on the phone or with emails. I heard a rumour that he may be away with a big contract in Wales, but I don't know for sure. I am prepared to wait a while to see if he returns, but in the meantime I have bought a bed frame for a rock and roll bed. I can get the flooring fitted and the bed and get the conversion done after - either by him or, if he doesn't return, by someone else. The bed frame I have bought hasn't yet been made because the guy who makes them is waiting for me to tell him what dimensions to make it, and I have to tell him soon.
I was hoping to be able to fit a bed 107cm wide but I think this is too wide for a Bongo, but want to get the biggest I can - over 3ft I hope, even a couple of inches more is better than nothing. Does anyone know if a 3/4 bed 104cm wide will fit in a Bongo with a normal side conversion, or will I have to have even narrower?
It seems to me that the limiting factor is the standard depth of the commonly used hobs and sinks. I don't need deep cupboards, but a standard campervan hob and sink like the smev 9222 (I think it is, and pretty much all I have seen when searching for hobs) is 37cm deep, so I suppose the side unit has to be a minimum of about 40cm deep. What I am not sure of, and what makes a difference of several inches, is whether the worktop of a side conversion can go right up to the bottom of the side window - over that lip on the interior side panel which sticks out a few inches.
Can anyone with a side conversion please let me know what width rock and roll bed they have in their bongos?
I know that there are some conversions in which the sink and hob area stick out over the foot of the bed, to allow a wider bed, but I can't get hold of the guy who does the fibreglass units I like to ask if they can make that shape or whether the profile of the unit will have to be straight down (i.e. as wide at the bottom as the top). I thought if I have to get a narrow bed, I could have the rear end part of the side conversion (over the rear wheel arch) much lower - at the level of the bed frame and board (with a hinged opening at the top to store odd things), and then I would make a long narrow foam cushion to fit on the top of that to make the usable bed space wider at the head and shoulder end when the bed is pulled out..... if that makes sense.
I have measured the length also to see if a 180cm length will fit. That is longer than the one I have now (which is about 5ft 6ins) and looks a bit tight to have any standing room at the bottom of the bed. I gather that for registration as a camper a 180cm bed (or 6ft which is a little bit longer) is mandatory. Any comments on being able to squeeze in a bed this long would also be appreciated.
Many thanks. Sorry for the long post. I have been trying to work it out with a tape measure, but not sure if I can measure the width from the bottom of the window or from the interior panel.
