Greece Green Bongo at viewpoint in Dorset

Postby mitreklov » Mon Apr 10, 2017 10:12 pm

We took a trip down to the New Forest and into Dorset this past weekend (April 8-9th 2017). On our travels we drove along the ridge towards Lulworth and pulled into viewpoint overlooking Tyenam Village to be greeted by this sight:

Anybody on here own the N809 Bongo on the right? Hope you don't mind the photo op, we couldn't resist it the two were so similar.

Not me but i know those roads so well from my past. Is that a car park on the road from Steeple to Tyneham by any chance?

Not quite on the Tyneham road, it's on the top road between Steeple and East Lulworth, you look down on Tyneham.

Fabulous views out to sea and inland over the Army range.

That's a superb photo. I wouldn't be surprised if it appeared on the cover of an owner's club magazine in the not too distant future (registrations removed ofcourse)!

Sorry, that's what I'd meant. In the distance is Swyre Head and Kimmeridge. Back up the road is Steeple. Me and my buddies used to fly our model gliders at both sites. On the opposite side of the road is the view over the tank manouvring practice area (or it used to be). How could i have guessed that all these years later Bongos would thrive in abundance in the favourite haunt of my youth. In retirement I intend to revisit in my Bongo, complete with one or two of the own-design models i flew there c1982, and that i still have.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. :)

Since the post has sparked a certain amount of interest, I've added a couple more pictures to the link, suitably defaced of course.

Also added the money shot from the weekend trip. :D

Enjoy.

mitreklov, thank you for those cracking pics. I see the old Manston in the background is still going then. Looks a good spot for a wild camp, but where is the nearest pub? =P~ =P~

Actually that shot was taken in the top field at Woodyhyde campsite, just up the road from Harmans Cross. I took the picture just as we were leaving. A nice site if you want that Railway Children experience

Is that the Swanage Railway? I gave some money and helped out once or twice when it was first a twinkle in the enthusiasts eye, back in the 70s. How it has grown. That engine looks more suited to intercity work

Back then, before the road access from London etc improved, Purbeck was a whole world away. Such happy memories of bygone days. But I'll be back 8)
