loss of power

Post by playnotwork » Fri Aug 11, 2017 12:00 am

Evening all,
Had her back on the road for about 6 weeks having just recovered from a bent conrod, Alls been well for the past couple of weeks, until tonight.
Going uphill suffered complete loss of power, with no warning. Rolled back down the hill to a place of safety, with not enough power in the engine to get out of a pot hole. Luckily 1 mile from home so towed to safety.
2.5td in her, oil ok, fuel ok water ok. She sounds like she is missing on tickover and not wanting to rev. Bottom end sounds ok( i think).
Any ideas where to start, thinking fuel related.
cheers

Ticks over badly at 700 revs. Won't rev over 1000 revs. Tried diesel straight into injector pump. No change. Any ideas?

So soon after the previous work sounds would make me wonder, what caused the previous problem ?

Might be worthwhile checking the valve and pump timing.(presuming All 3 Filters are clear).

Good Luck.

evening
went to check rocker arms tonight. Found some loose tappets so went to reset clearances and noticed that when i turned the engine over, the camshaft had snapped in the middle.
Will this be the cause or a sympton of something else. no rockers broken, are the valves and pistons likely to be ok?
Can i fit my old camshaft to this head(luckily kept the old head.
help appreciated.

cams usually break on the bongo when the head gets hot and the center lifts (stretch bolts).
was it bled up ok and was it air/water tight after your recent works. sounds like a head off job im afraid valves could be damaged.

I am finding these statements rather confusing , ( cams usually break on the bongo when the head gets hot and the center lifts (stretch bolts)

can you elaborate a wee bit so we might understand, not having Your mechanical and engineering knowledge an explanation would be very much appreciated.

I am always willing to learn...

Good Luck

Sorry forgot to mention that I put a reconditioned head, when changing Conrod. Did specify that I did want a Mazda head when bought and was not sure I got what I asked for! Seen 2 older posts on here regarding cheap Chinese cams snapping in the middle. Is this the problem?

Yes, a snapped cam is a problem.

Sorry, fetching coat now.

hello again
put the camshaft in today and hey presto back in business.
Performance much better, than with that cheap Chinese CAM.
Only worry is will this cam fail!
Cheers all, :D
