erratic dashboard

Post by jasonh1967 » Fri Aug 04, 2017 11:27 am

Hi,
ive had a look through forum to see if any thread on my problem but I cant see it...so apologies if it has been already discussed here. My 2.5 manual N reg bongo has an ongoing dashboard problem. The speedometer and rev counter can be very erratic and flick about all over the place. For years this was just an occasional problem but now it happens pretty much all the time and after flicking around for a bit will just stop altogether and stay at 0. Very occasionally they will give a truer reading but it doesnt last for long before the flicking and or stopping happens. Also the temp guage registers as constantly overheating...even though it isnt overheating and i have had extensive research done on this by a mechanic. The fuel guage is always accurate. Anybody any ideas. My bongo has been a very good runner but I have had a number of electrical issues. Thanks

Do you have a speedo chip fitted ? I was having similar problems when I first got my Bongo that had a converted speedo. I removed the speedo chip & fitted an overlay instead & never had another problem with it.

Might also be worthwhile checking the plugs/wiring on the back of the instrument cluster are clean and secure .

or the alternator is packing up, admittedly, very slowly. check the voltage out of the alternator through the rev range, make sure it rises with revs etc.

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it. Speedo chip sounds a real possibility :D

The Speedo chip shouldn't affect the RPM, different sensors, however all the gauges use a common earth connection other than the fuel gauge, so check the connectors and the common earth!
