If you go that route do clean/replace the fuel filters, not forgetting the 'Banjo'.

A thought from left field, to which I welcome critical comment.

Seeing as you are confident it is the right fuel, would it be worth trying a double dose of cetane boosting additive. If it does the trick it would save the hassle of draining the tank. Then when you are through with the duff fuel, fill up and change or clean the filters.

My rationale is that raising the cetane gives a smoother burn and this may avoid the pinking scenario under load.

as said above, petrol into diesel makes the engine run like a bag of spanners with poor revs and no turbo boost depending on the mix

The mechanic has asked what engine is in the van.
I've provided the log book which states it's a Mazda bongo 2.5td., but it seems this isn't enough. What other more specific information do you think he might want?

Possibly SGL5 is what he needs to know, or SGL3 for the 2wd. [-o<

Or WL-T as used in the Ford Ranger, although there are small differences.

It's a type WLT diesel 2.5 TD engine. Same as a Ford Ranger.

The mechanic has decided it is a problem with the gearbox shifting from 2nd to 3rd, although I'm concerned because I noticed problems from 1st to second also.

He says we probably need a new gearbox :(

So, the options are
1. Tow it back to the UK to have it fixed
2. Get parts shipped out to Czech

Has anyone had any experience with such things? Opinions on preferences would be helpful..

Before taking any drastic action ask your Czech-mate to consider the possibility that the gearbox solenoids need replacing. They are available from http://mazdabongo.com/catalog/mazda-bon ... ic-models/

Show him this (it's a translation from the product description):

Nebudete ji moci dát dohromady a budete potřebovat odbornou pomoc. Nemusíte otvírat těleso ventilu k výměně solenoidních obalů.

Thanks for that suggestion Ian, but the mechanic seems sure it is an issue with the gearbox.

He's trying to source one and is asking what gearbox it is? Is there a way of identifying the gearbox? Does the Ford Ranger have the same gearbox as well as the engine?
Has anyone had any success sourcing one in Europe?

I've found one on the bongo spares site:
http://www.bongospares.co.uk/shop/gearb ... -gear-box/
Any suggestions about how to get it here short of my driving it here myself?

A good way to ship things to Cz is to use one of the white van service people like dolphi-transport.com. They'll pick up for you and the cost is usually fairly reasonable, but it's not an overnight service.

I didn't remember their name before, but it's come to me. I've used FKM ( www.prepravazasilek.webnode.cz ) and they were very good. Cheap too.

Thanks for your shipping suggestions Katka, I'm waiting for Bongo spares to reply about their shipping policy.

In the meantime, the mechanic has been talking to some automatic gearbox specialists here in Czech. He said there is a code on the back of the gearbox, but he says this hasn't helped him identify what type of gearbox it is? Does anyone have any idea what information he wants when he asks 'What type of gearbox is it?'
