Temp gauge not working

Post by mitchelln » Sat Jun 24, 2017 8:30 pm

Hi.

So AC pump sorted, now temp gauge.

It stays on the peg unless I sit in a queue. Then it moves a tiny bit to just touch the first line past C.

So I guess the gauge itself is not dud and it's probably the sender.

Can anyone point me to where it is on a 2L petrol?

Is there a Haynes manual for these BTW? Nothing came up on Amazon.

Thanks!

No Haynes manual, are you sure there is a Thermostat fitted ? Common way of making an overheating problem disappear is to remove the thermostat!

As Geoff has said, it might be worthwhile checking the thermostat, it may have been got at or simply failed in the open position.

Thermostat location is shown top right hand side of page, 15-171S , I would purchase a New thermostat before you open it up and replace it as a service item.

Brilliant. Thanks for that. I think you are probably right.

Was in slow traffic today and the gauge got up to about a third and then dropped right back when we got moving again. The sort of behaviour you'd expect with a stuck/removed thermostat.

Spot the old Mini owner ;)

Okay, had a look see. All looks pretty immaculate. The feed hose is definitely new and the thermostat housing gasket looks new too. I assume it's the sender that's screwed into the same housing? That does look a little beaten up.

The previous owner just spent a month driving round Spain. So I suspect he had all the cooling system serviced. Perhaps due to the destination he chose to leave the thermostat out...

Anyway, I'll order a new thermostat and probably a sender as well to be sure. I assume that as soon as I slacken the bolts off water will start spewing out?

Thanks for the help with this.

I don't know the 2L engine, so somebody else may be able to comment on this suggestion.

If the stat has been removed or is stuck open, the internal heaters may not get very hot, possibly luke warm at best. Not so noticeable in the current weather (!) but you could feel the pipes to the front and rear heaters after running for 20 mins. Normally the hotter pipe of each pair would be almost too hot to touch, certainly uncomfortable. If they are only warm then it points to a thermostat problem. If piping ouch hot, it points to a sensor problem.

Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try. Got the bits on order as well from the shop here. Not mucking about when it comes to engine cooling! I've got it booked in for a service, so I'll get the parts put on then. Saves me getting wet ;)

Why does the heating go up so high on these things? 30+ degrees - I could convert it into a sauna!

Okay, so my Haydn T4 with low coolant alarm has arrived.

Not sure where to attach the temp sensor on my 2L petrol. Only the driver side seems to have a wiring harness rubber bung to route the wire through to the engine. So need a suitable bolt on that side. Any suggestions welcome!

Also, where can I pick up ignition 12V from? I'm installing it in the big cubby in front of the gear selector.

I changed the "official" temp sensor today - temp gauge still not working right. Next step is a full drain and thermostat swap/fit.

Power is best picked up using a piggyback fuse holder ( see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-Add-A-Cir ... Swd4tT8HMh ) into one of the existing switched fuses on the second row down.

If you don't get an answer here, try giving Haydn Alarms a call. Always found them to be very helpful.

Thanks for the replies.

Those fuse widgets are very neat. I've ordered a couple.

I'll ring Haydn alarms tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions.

I had this problem and fixed it by fitting a new thermostat.

Thanks for the info.

Barry is booked into a luxury spa treatment day on Friday. Full service, coolant flush, thermostat swap (or fit if it's missing!) and cambelt change to be on the safe side.

I fitted the TM4 last weekend and it's showing normal temperatures. It seems the 2L cooling system has very good capacity for dumping heat.
