Post by carolynmd » Mon May 29, 2017 9:54 am

When i start engine, it starts screeching very loud, then smoke from steering column? if quickly put into DRIVE, noise and smoke stops. If left in drive, its ok, but changing, noise starts again. Help

first thing is to get someone to check the front belts and belt tensioners, are you in the AA etc.call it in as a breakdown and ask them to check. likely to be a belt or pulley problem.

just a thought, have you switched the aircon on, if yes turn it off and see if it still happens.

Hi guys, thanks for the response. I havent had the aircon on. Ive checked the automatic transmission fluid, all ok. The noise happens in park, goes when in drive, but happens upon moving throug gears! I'm hoping not the gearbox!

The above posts are addressing the quick easy and obvious. However given that it is directly related to selecting gears, the gearbox looks likely.
How are you checking the auto gearbox oil? Did you follow the instructions for checking it with the oil is warmed up after driving, with the engine running and after cycling through the gears?
If the gearbox oil is cold and the engine not been started, a very rough approximation is that the level should reach the twist in the dip stick.
What is the colour of the gearbox oil?
Does it smell like burnt toast?
