Removing mirror glass

Post by Roy748 » Tue May 23, 2017 6:09 pm

Hello all.
I thought I would share my creative thinking with regards to removing the mirror glass without damaging it - well hopefully.
I recently needed to repair the mirror housing and in order to do so needed to remove the mirror glass. Previous experience has taught me levering off the glass via the edges often results in a cracked lens.. however using two balloons inserted around the glass, in my case one at the outside edge and one on the bottom close to the mirror mount, and inflating each balloon gently using my compressor, (although a balloon pump should work and two people makes it easier to seal one balloon whilst inflating the other) the equal pressure applied behind the mirror glass popped if off without breaking. I would advice placing some tape across the front of the mirror both horizontal and vertical to catch the mirror, as it can pop forward unexpectedly.
Hope this helps.
