Loud knocking noise when slowing and coming to a stop

Post by McrBongo » Mon May 22, 2017 10:37 am

Hi, I've noticed recently that my 1999 2.5d auto Bongo is making a loud clicking or knocking noise when slowing down just before stopping.

The noise seems to be coming from under the drivers side front. I'm wondering if it is the gears changing down and going into first? The van is working fine and doesn't seem to have any gearbox problems. However, the noise seems to be getting worse.

I had it checked and serviced recently at a garage that specialises in Bongo's

I'd be grateful for any help as I can't seem to find anyone else with this problem.

Cheers.

4wd or 2wd?
Does it make it if you coast slowly?

4wd. It makes the sound maybe about 5 metres before stopping at a set of lights, when I'm braking to slow down just before I stop. It doesn't make the sound at any other point. It sounds like its something kind of falling falling into place, like an old school mechanical shift.

have you had the brakes changed or serviced lately, if the pads are cheap copies or the stainless pad sliders have been lost this can allow the pad/s to click as they try to move with the rotation of the disc.
or check the front anti roll bar and brackets and drop links, all of these can click/crack. then check the wishbone and bottom ball joint the ball joint can click and the wishbone can rust through and split.

Excellent, thanks.

Yes, I have had the brakes changed recently. I had a drive today to check it out, pretty sure it is coming from the brakes as I came to an almost stop without applying brakes and the noise only happens when I apply the brakes, it comes just before the van stops.

Is it worth getting in contact with the garage that changed them?

check the wheel nuts too.
if the wheels are alloys and are the type with multi holes, that is, fit more than one car and have extra holes that are not used on the bongo, or have larger centre holes that do not fit the bongo properly check that they may have had spigot rings fitted to make the wheel fit snuggly, one may have been left off when the wheel has been refitted. #-o
