Thanks for the replies will have another go on Monday. Can't see the ball pien hammer doing any thing different as I've been belting it with a lump hammer to no avail!

get it so that the hub is hanging free then put your bongo lightweight scissor jack in between the bottom wishbone and the drive shaft, dont over do it but put put some pressure on it so that when you belt it again it will pop free at the balljoint.

Ok, so it doesn't have to be a ball pein hammer but it does need to be 4-5lbs with a long shaft and a smallish face. Lump hammers tend to have short handles and big heads, you cannot get the swing into it with a short shaft (steady Bob :D ) and you are probably going to need a two handed swing on this one like your knocking a cricket ball for six. A claw hammer is not heavy enough and the facing is too soft.

The first part of this video may help.
Place an axle stand under the wishbone cross-member or chassis leg first though.
The thing to note is how far he jacks the leg up with the scissor jack. I would put it on the hub part of the disc as it is safer there and jam the brake pedal on with a bit of 4x2 or a friendly leg. Putting the steering on full lock will help and give better access.
By jacking it here he has taken the load off the joint.
That`s all you will need from that vid the rest is not applicable.

Combine that with this.

This guy has put a pry bar under the joint as he hits it ( It would be nice if they all came out as easy as that!) you can achieve the same thing by putting a long bar (scaffold tube?) over the lower arm placing one end under the outrigger @ rear of the wheel arch and getting someone to stand on the other end, make sure you have the nut screwed on a few turns,
I favour this method as they can be jump up and down as you hit the joint.
Just be a bit careful and dont put legs or bits of you under the van!
Now knock it for six on the white dot

When you come to fit the new wishbone  do not finally tighten the securing bolts until the vehicle is on the ground bearing the weight of the van as the bushes need to be in the ride position doing it with suspension hanging may twist them.

Its very obvious that you are struggling with this job , I would recommend that you get yourself a Mechanic, they will change the wishbone in 10/15 minutes (providing no damage has been done), its More than Often safer a cheaper in the long run.

Perfect! That did the trick!

I put the front bush up on some wood to level it out. The jack kept sliding up the wishbone though as the drive shaft was on an angle. A couple of big bolts through the holes in the wishbone soon sorted that though. Gave it a bit of pressure, then a few good whacks released it.

New wishbone now on loosely. Just off to get a new spanner to fit the ball joint nut and a tube of sealant to put a drop on the tiny hole in the cv boot.

The old ball joint was well and truly shot.

All on now and back on the ground. Settled the suspension and then tightened the bolts up. Will test drive tomorrow once the sealant is properly dry.

Did a few other jobs too, such as some rust treatment and a couple of electrical jobs.

All tracked up and test driven.

No more nasty knock when turning slightly right!

Thanks again for all the advice, got there in the end!
